Sirens Call

A friend

I am back in open sea, again with nothing to do. I decide to go explore an sunken shipwreck nearby. Coming closer to the wreck I see skeletons laying around on the deck, "Those must have been the crew" goes trough my head as a shiver runs up my spine. After getting over the sight of the skeletons laying about I enter the ship and explore.

There isnt a whole lot interesting inside the shipwreck, atleast not to me. I find some money and some jewels and gold but hey, im a mermaid I can't just go to the market and spend it. The usefull thing I find are some blankets which I take with me as I leave the wreck.

When I look up at the sky I see its late, the sun is starting to set. I swim around to find a good spot to rest. Once I find a good spot I put down my blankets and weigh them down with some rocks. I sit down and watch the sunset, laying down to rest after the sun has fully dissapeared.

I open my eyes to see the bright blue sky above me, the waves of the water rolling over the surface. I sit upright and dig my hand into the sand as I think back on the girl I saw yesterday. I remember her dark brown hair with her golden brown eyes and I decide to go back to were I saw her. When I get there she's there and she's fishing again. I again slowly swim closer, this time closer than I came yesterday. She suddenly notices me and waves. I decide not to swim away, instead I swim up and brake the surface of the water. "Hey! Come closer, there is noone around and don't worry I won't tell anybody." she calls out to me, her voice sounds sweet and cheerfull.

I cautiously swim over to her. She pats the ground beside her, inviting me to sit next to her. I take her offer and push myself up out of the water, still letting my tail hang down into the water. I quickly cover my chest, remembering I dont have a shirt. I feel oxygen replace the water in my lungs as I take some breaths.

"Nice to meet you, my name is Maree." the girl next to me says. "Nice to meet you too, Maree, my name is Lynn." Her eyes start wandering to my tail. "Your tail is beautiful." She says with amazement in her voice. "Thanks, your... legs are also beautiful." I reply with a smile on my face. She giggles at the joke. "Thats a good one but you dont have to cover your chest, im also a girl you know." I blush slightly as I put my arms down. She suddenly pulls on the fishingrod, pulling a fish out of the water and putting it into a bucket. We start talking and before I know we've been talking and laughing for hours.

"Are you from around here? Ive never seen you before." I face her again and say "No im from a different village called oakwood village. Im not sure how far away it is, probably far." I can hear a hint of sadness in my own voice. Even though I ran away, I kind of miss my parents but I miss my brothers more and I don't regret my decision to run. "You must miss your village. Do you want to tell me what happend and how you became a mermaid?" I nod my head and tell her the story, my parents, David, running away, sailing and ofcourse being trow off of the boat. After I'm finished I apologise to her "sorry, its just that I haven't talked to anyone since I've become a mermaid." "Dont be sorry, I understand. I dont really have much friends so I often talk with my little sister, her name is Ashe." she tells as she stares at her feet hanging into the water. "Do you live with only your little sister? Do you want to tell what happend to your parents?" I ask, being carefull not to upset her.

"Well, I used to live with my mom and dad, an older brother and sister and my younger sister. We lived in a town pretty far away. An illness started to spread, my father was the first that caught it. Soon my mother and older sister also became sick, my father passed away not much later. When my sister also died my mother told my brother and Tori and I to take everything worth some money and to take all the food and flee to another town. My brother and I started packing everything we could and went to rest before leaving. The next morning I went to say goodbye to mother, she had also passed away." she pauses, I see a tear falling from her eyes.

"You dont have to tell more if it hurts you this much." I tell her. "No its allright, you're the first person I feel comfortable to share this with even though we only know eachother for a few hours. Anyways, not long after we left my brother started getting worse. I realised soon that he had also gotten sick. One morning when we wanted to leave, he wouldnt get up." Tears were starting to roll down her cheeks. "He told me and Ashe to take everything and leave him behind, get to a village and start a new life. I looked back and he smiled and waved us goodbye." she tells as she lets out a small sob. "After a long time of walking, Ashe and I finaly reach this village and I buy us a house with the things we took with us. I sell bread and fish to buy food and clothes for me and Ashe. The other villagers just buy and sell with us but leave us be for the most part, you're the first friend I have." I feel guilty for asking her to tell the story but I like the idea of having a friend. "Do you want a hug?" I ask as I open my arms. She puts down her fishingrod and accepts the hug, slowly collecting herself as I rub her back and tell her it's alright.

After she calmed down we continue to talk and before we realise it the sun is already starting to set. "Oh no! Sorry, I have to go back to Ashe!" Maree yells as she stands up. "Dont apologise, you should go back to your little sister. I had fun today, will we see eachother again?" I ask, hoping the answer will be yes. "I also had fun, ill be here again tomorrow so if you want to we can hang out again tomorrow" "I would like that, there isnt much to do in the ocean." I say jokingly. Maree giggles as she picks up the bucket with water and fish. "See you tomorrow then!" She waves as she walks into the forrest, back to her village. I push myself up and Let myself slip back into the water, letting the water once again fill my lungs. As I swim away I smile thinking about my new friend.

Im sorry I didnt post an update earlier. Basicly im in my last year of highschool and I have exams starting next week. Ive already been accepted into my new school so I wont have to worry about that. I just have to study a lot and im just tired very often. I might not update untill my exams are over. Thanks for reading and hopefully untill the next chapter.
