I could feel the heat in every part of my body. My forehead was covered in sweat and I was panting. Nevertheless, I didn't stop moving. I couldn't, I wanted to keep this rhythm at all costs. The music was booming in my ears and the people around me were completely absorbed in the sounds, just like me.
I loved to dance. I had been moving around the dance floor for over an hour and a half, enjoying the fact that the DJ was really pumping out the best songs.
However, my flowing movements were suddenly interrupted when a hand placed itself on my shoulder. I turned towards the disruptive factor and sighed immediately when I recognized him. The person in front of me was none other than my boyfriend, who had made it his mission to spoil my fun.
"It's time to go," he said loudly in my ear and pulled me off the dance floor without waiting for an answer. As soon as he took my hand, I didn't stand a chance. I couldn't do anything against his supernatural strength.
"You stink," I called out to him shortly after we had left the club and the booming music behind us. It was true. An acrid smell clung to him and I had a nasty suspicion that he'd gotten himself into another situation that ended in a bloodbath.
He just rolled his eyes, though. "And you're drunk." I snorted and glared at him. "I haven't had a drink in two hours, I've been dancing the whole time." He gave me a look after he stopped in front of a fancy Mercedes and opened the passenger door for me. I crossed my arms in front of my chest and stared back at him. "So you've spent the last two hours driving other men crazy instead of trying it on your boyfriend?" I shrugged my shoulders and sat down in the car after all, having noticed the cool wind.
"I had to switch off," I mumbled and pulled the car door shut. For a brief moment, I was surrounded by complete silence and actually dared to close my eyes and take a deep breath. Then the driver's door opened and I was snapped back to reality. He got in silently and sat down. But instead of starting the engine, he looked at me calmly and put his hand on my thigh. "You've had to switch off for the last three months. Don't you think it's time to start over?" I remained silent. I was silent for quite a while, trying to define the effect his words had on me. Finally, almost tonelessly, I said, "She was my sister, Jack." I caught his gaze and we sat like that in silence for minutes. Eventually, he sighed and started the engine.
"I have to get back to New Orleans," Jack mumbled as he turned into the driveway half an hour later. I raised my eyes to him with a jerk and stared at him in surprise. "I thought Klaus had banned you?"
He ran a hand over his face. "No, he didn't ban me. He didn't like me because I attacked his brother after he..." I grimaced instantly and furrowed my brow. "What does he want from you?" I asked next, and Jack sighed again. "I don't know exactly. But he made it very clear to me today that I have no choice." He looked at me meaningfully and I felt a shiver run down my spine. "What did he do?" I asked tonelessly. Jack averted his eyes and looked at his hands. He hesitated and was silent for a while until he finally mumbled, "He sent me a severed hand from my ex." I widened my eyes, but Jack wasn't finished, "And he said the rest would follow if you didn't come with me to New Orleans." Now he lifted his eyes again and looked at me. I knew he and Catelyn had been separated for a long time, even before I'd met him, but I could tell he still cared about her. They had a harmonious break-up and were still friends. So it was no wonder that this action by his actually good friend hit him pretty hard. Nevertheless, I couldn't quite get over it.
"Is there no other option? Where Klaus is, there's also his family. And just thinking about being able to run into him..." I grimaced.
My boyfriend sighed and put his hand on my shoulder to reassure me. "Come on, let's go inside first." I hoped that he was closing the subject for now, so I nodded and left the car to go to Jack's small house. It was registered in my name so that other vampires didn't have access.
