Who would like me? The girl at school who never talked, kept her head down and went on with life by herself. No one knew what she sounded like, if she was smart or funny. She was just there.

I was convinced that this world had nothing to offer; no learning, no happiness. I couldn't see any beauty to this existence. So I went on with my life, head low to deflect the blows that were shot.

I took an astronomy class one year. Every Friday night, we would go to a grassy field and set up our telescopes to watch the heavens.

I met him one night. He set up his telescope up by mine. He tilted his head up and smiled. "It's a good night for star gazing," he said. I nodded and went back to adjusting my own telescope. I made notes on my paper when I identified constellations. I had finished early and was just observing when he touched my hand. "Come here, watch the stars with me."

I shook my head and pulled my hand away. "I am," I whispered. I put a hand on my telescope. He took a step back and waved for me to follow him. "Watch with your own eyes."

He walked a few feet away and laid down in the dewy grass. He put his hands behind his head and stared at the sky. "Look at the colors," he said, completely fascinated. Intrigued, I walked to him and sat in the grass. I tilted my head up to watch the sky. He looked at me and said, "You'll just hurt your neck like that."

I sighed with slight annoyance and leaned back into the grass. The dew was cold and I shivered. He moved back so our heads were nearly touching. "Watch the sky," he said. His hands went out in front of him. "See! The moon and the blue swirl around each other."

I couldn't see it. I watched and only saw the stars twinkling and the moon glowing. I made to get up but he grabbed my hand and pointed at the inky sky. "There! Do you see it?" And I finally saw it.

Colors spun and danced. The sky was purple and blue, not just black. The stars blazed and burned against the cool celestial sphere. Everything became one. He tilted his head back and looked at my wonder filled face. "You can see it now." I merely nodded in awe.

Our hands lay held in the grass. I was worried that if I let go, the colors would go away.

We were there for hours and when it was time to go, we got up, packed up and went our separate ways. But I will always remember the night and the boy that helped me see beauty.
