Grey and I headed back to the dorms together side by side, him still smelling softly of chlorine.
"You should really shower," Grey scrunched his nose up at me.
"Have you seen yourself lately?" I responded without hesitation.
"I smell incredible and you know it," Grey pointed a finger at me but he was smirking I shook my head giving a short laugh.
"Well you always smell bad so I guess I'm kind of used to it," I teased as we bounded up the stairs to the third floor in perfect synchronisation.
"Cara," Greys voice became hesitant as he stumbled, "look, I, um, I don't know if anyone ever told you this but you really stink of fish."
"Shut up," I swatted him just as we reached the top floor and almost bumped into one of our floor mates Brandon who I recognised from being on the swim team with Grey, Nico and Mitch.
"Oh," Brandon's eyes roamed over the two of side by side as we parted for him to go past us, "are you two together now?"
"Excuse me?" My brow creased and my stomach immediately became knotted in panic. I spun around to face him as he paused at the top of the stairs immediately looking like he regretted speaking.
"Sorry," he amended quickly, "I just saw you two kiss on the last day of term and kind of presumed."
"Say that again," the deep command that came from behind me made my stomach sink to my feet.
Brandon looked terrified now and gulped looking even more like he wished he could swallow his previous comment.
"When I, um, saw them, um, .... kiss," he fumbled out then bolted straight down the stairs before he could be forced to say anything else.
"What the fuck?" Mitch stated bluntly. Dread filled my every pore as I pivoted on my heel to face Mitch's mutinous face, he was staring down Grey like a bull about to charge. To make matters a million times worse both Nico and Sawyer were poised either side him both of their eyes wide and faces full of betrayal. "Is this true?"
Mitch's eyes darted to me and my face must have told him everything he needed to know as his face deepened in it's shade of red. Before I could comprehend what was happening Mitch was charging at Grey, practically flying as he flung himself on top of Grey causing him to topple to the ground with Mitch landing on him fists raised.
"No!" I screamed my hands fluttering to my mouth.
"You lying shit," Mitch's fist connected with Greys face and I howled. I tried to drive in and stop Mitch but strong arms gripped around my waist, Sawyer, who was much stronger than he appeared, held me back as I wrestled to stop Mitch pounding Grey.
"Mitch! Stop, please!" I begged tears now streaming down my face. It was killing me to see them turn on each other like this especially when I knew it was over me.
"We had a fucking deal," Mitch's fists froze in mid air as he glowered down at Grey who's arms lay uselessly by his sides, he wasn't even trying to defend himself and a trickle of blood ran down his chin, "you promised."
"It was my fault," I cried desperately, "I was the one who kissed him."
That finally seemed to break Mitch out of his spell, his eyes turned to look up at me and when they did they were full of a sadness that hurt my very soul.
"You did?"
"Yeah," I pulled myself up a little taller but my trembling voice showed my pain, "I was the one who kissed him."
"That's even worse," a new level of fury took over Mitch as he narrowed his eyes at Grey and the bruise already beginning to blossom on Grey's cheek, "you could've told us and we wouldn't have been allowed to be angry because you didn't break the deal but you chose not to tell us," I hadn't thought about it like that but I guess it made sense, "you wanted to keep her all to yourself you asshole."
Mitch's fist connected with Grey's face again as I simultaneously attempted to launch myself out of Sawyer's arms but his iron grip only tightened as I fought to protect Grey. Nico was trying to restrain Mitch but his attempts were futile.
"Mitch! Stop!" Nico pleaded loudly.
A crowd had gathered around us now, hovering in their bedroom doorways watching the scene with apprehension on their faces. I saw a few of them wincing every time Mitch's fist flew back down to hit some part of Greys torso or face.
"Asshole!" Mitch matched each syllable with a punch.
"Help me," Nico implored one of the boys, he was captain of the football team I knew that much and a massive guy. Bigger than Mitch even. Him and another muscular guy finally helped Nico restrain Mitch by pinning Mitch's solid arms behind his back. Mitch allowed them to pull him off of Grey and back onto his knees as he panted.
This time when I fought against Sawyer he released me letting me rush between Mitch and Grey to put myself directly in the line of fire. I fell to my knees in front of Mitch looking him directly in the eye. Tears still stained my cheeks and my breath cane out in frantic pants.
"Please," my voice cracked as I stared up into Mitch's lush green eyes and watched the switch within them from uncontrollable fury to the soft caring gentleness I was used to seeing in them, "don't hurt him."
"I'm sorry," Mitch was shaking now, overflowing with emotion, "I didn't mean to scare you."
"I'm okay," I fiercely wiped the tears from my cheeks, "I just can't bear for you to hurt each other."
"I'm not going to apologise for punching him, he deserved every single one he got," Mitch hissed gruffly. He rose up to his feet and pointed a finger at Grey, either side of him the boys twitched ready to restrain him if necessary. He warned with a voice of thunder, "don't fucking speak to me."
With that Mitch turned on his heel and marched straight to his room where he slammed the door with a deafening bang that made me flinch. Once he was gone, I instantly spun to Grey who was dripping blood everywhere, his left eye was almost swollen shut and his left cheek was becoming a rich purple colour. Blood dribbled out his mouth and nose, at the sight of him I gasped my breath catching in my throat.
"Oh my god," I shuffled so I was kneeling next to his head and hovered my hands over him wanting to help but at the same time not wanting to touch anything in case I made it worse. Inside me my heart was splintering into a thousand pieces. Nothing was ever going to be the same.
A double upload for you! I'd love to know what you thought about the dramatic ending. More coming as soon as possible don't worry. Thanks for your comments as well I love reading them.
