Merida had been chasing Jack when she saw the castle coming into view. She stopped to stare in absolute wonder at the majestic stone towers reaching to the sky, the forest stretching behind it and the surface of the lake's water glittering.
' I wonder what's on the other side of the forest.' She thought then remembered Jack. Rage boiled and she sprinted down the aisle, grabbing the back of his shirt.
"Hey!" He exclaimed.
"You do not just run away!" Suddenly the train came to a halt and Merida toppled over on top of Jack, noses inches apart, eyes right across from each others. They just stared for a moment, unsure of what had just happened or what to do next.
"EVERYONE OFF THE TRAIN!" The driver shouted and she vaulted off jack, wishing that hadn't been such an awkward silence.
Merida sprinted towards Hagrid, the gamekeeper, and slid there first and watched triumphantly as everyone else lagged behind.
"Show off." Jack muttered and Merida ignored him- after punching his shoulder quite hard. He staggered off clutching it.
Hiccup was getting swept away in the crowd so she reached out and grabbed his shoulder, steering him out of the loud first years.
"I wonder if a dragon was toothless." Rapunzel mused and grinned.
"That would be strange." Merida agreed.
"Are you Scottish?" Hiccup asked out of the blue.
"Yes. Yes I am. Are you norse?"
"Yeah."
"Cool."
"Not really." Hiccup shuddered.
"My family is loud, strong, angry, and boisterous. Not that cool." He admitted.
"My moms stiff as a board."
"My mum's traveling most of the time."
"I don't have a dad."
"What?" Hiccup and Merida said at the same time.
"I knew you would do that!" She smiled but sadness lurked behind it like- like something that demented people and ate their happiness. A dementator. A Dementor. No, that sounded stupid.
"Lets go!" Merida cheered and led the way into the school.
*****HICCUP*****
It was all a bit overwhelming, really.
But Hiccup could manage.
As they walked through the doors he prayed, not Slytherin. Hiccup wasn't evil- right? But he wasn't particularly brave either. Ravenclaw wouldn't accept weaklings like him, probably. The only thing left was Hufflepuff and it was nice and peaceful, so that seemed... Okay.
Hiccup caught sight of a boy with black hair and a scar. Harry Potter. It would be Harry's.... 5th year?
"Come on, Hiccup! Can't wait." Merida pulled him along.
The great hall was truly great.
The ceiling was a galaxy of stars and a brightly shining moon. Four long tables stretch almost the entire distance of the huge Great Hall. Each had different colors for a different house- yellow and black for Hufflepuff, red and gold for Gryffindor, blue and gray for Ravenclaw, and green and silver for Slytherin.
Cold fear bubbled inside Hiccup even more and he prayed to Thor. What if Hiccup didn't actually have a house? What if he was house less?
After a small speech a hat was put on a stool. The hat was faded and gray, torn up and frayed, with obviously replaced patches here in there, so it came as a shock to the first years when it opened its mouth and started to sing. Hiccup couldn't remember the words but... A singing-talking-living?- hat was a little much.
All to soon
"Corona, Rapunzul." The girl with the long braided hair that swept around her ankles stepped forward and put the hat on. After a moments hesitation
"RAVENCLAW!"
A few more names were called and
"DunBroch, Merida." "GRYFFINDOR!"
Then
"Frost, Jack!" "SLYTHERIN!"
Somehow Hiccup felt that when his name was called he would be in Hufflepuff. It seemed to make sense.
"Haddock, Hiccup."
Hiccup swallowed and walked nervously up to the hat which fell down over his eyes.
"Hmm.... Brave, very brave. Smart, too. A hard worker, clumsy at times, shy.... So not Slytherin, and not Gryffindor."
Hiccup almost sighed with relief.
"Ah, but then the 3 isn't a four if he isn't in HUFFLEPUFF!" The sorting hat yelled the last part and, ears ringing, he went to join the table.
