Percy's POV
I kicked at the rock making it skid across the pavement into the neighbor's yard. Looking around I noticed kids running around holding baskets overflowing with candy and dressed up in cheesy costumes. I smiled remembering the memories of my childhood as I was one of those children. I remember playing, goofing off, and dressing up as DC characters so clearly I could almost taste the sweet chocolate I would get every year from the apartment complex next to ours.
I walked unworried about the ghouls and goblins roaming the streets since they were only children, for once. My stride quickly picked up as I glanced down at my phone as it rung pulling up Annabeth's photo. I know what you think, a demigod using a cell phone! What?! One word. Leo.
" H-hey!" I talked into the speaking my voice cracking with nerves of her blowing up on me for forgetting our date. " WHERE THE HECK ARE YOU!" Blasted out of the phone making me hold in farther away from my face then I thought I needed to.
" ya, ya, hold on. I'm on my way. I-I was stuck in traffic. Ya, stuck in traffic!" I laughed uneasy most likely giving away my already terrible lie. " Perseus Jackson I don't even have to hear that stupid laugh of yours to know when your lying. Cut to the chase! where are YOU!"
" I'm on" I paused blowing my dark bangs out of my eyes, " my way." I lied once more as I stopped at a store looking through the window gazing at the fresh deserts lining the shelves. "Ya, sure you are." Annabeth replied sarcasm dripping like acid. " Not like I know you aren't looking at a fresh arrangement of sugary sweets." I turned around searching for Annabeth knowing she was probably spying on me.
" Not spying, Percy. Not spying. Our date was here. This time. This date. Central Park. " She stopped before sighing, " Turn around." I turned mentally cursing myself. " Not that way Seaweed brain." I tuned spotting a deep tanned blond teenage leaning against a tree a phone pressed to her ear and an annoyed and frustrated look plastered on her face. Annabeth swiftly pushed her self off from leaning on the tree before walking towards me in quick long strides.
" You know you could have picked a better date right? It's Halloween. More than one word could describe this night. Kids and candy. You know what that gets you, right?" She gave me a pointed look before continuing, " Choas. Kids eat candy which leads to the body giving off energy which only lasts for about thirty minutes to an hour. That gives us thirty minutes to an hour of kids hopped up on sugar. Don't even get me started on the sugar crash." Before I could stop her trying not to get her onto another subject she spoke again, " When the child's sugar effect wears off that makes them groggy, annoying, and whiny. I don't want a date with a bunch of groggy, annoying, whiny kids!" She finished with a huff arms crossed.
" Sorry?" I replied meekly. " You better be!" Her voice dropped down to a whisper sending chills up my spine, " Do you want to know how long I've been waiting for you?" She hissed out at me. "No." I said lamely for not wanting to hear another rant. " Whatever!" Was called over Annabeth's shoulder as she started walking the opposite way from me her blond hair swaying in time with her hips. " Wait, where are you going?!" I called out.
" Home!" was called once more over her shoulder before all I could see of Annabeth was a blond dot in the crowd of adults and kids all swarming the place. Maybe it wasn't a good place for a date especially tonight.
I pulled the navy blue hood of my hoodie over my head before stuffing my hands into my pockets. Once again I began walking. It wasn't long till the kids dressed up soon became a thin line between pre-teenagers and teens. here and there adults scatted the premises watching over children like hawks reminding me I also had a mother watching over me. And probably waiting for me at the apartment. Sighing I walked quicker knowing not to be out after curfew with an overprotective mother like mine. You can't blame her though I am a demigod after all. Part of the overprotectiveness is probably when I went missing for eight months and in total lost contact with her for maybe almost a year.
One thing I hated the most in the war against Geae was when I lost riptide. ( Okay I know this doesn't happen but I don't want him to have a weapon. You'll understand later.) Now there is no more protection for me in the mortal world unless you count an insane girlfriend and a pocket knife unable to do any harm to monsters but able to work on mortals. Ironic much? I haven't got into too much trouble which required me to use my new 'trusty' pocket knife. Man, I really wish I still had my beautiful Riptide.
As my thoughts turned form Riptide the most cheesy movie scene happened. I noticed I was being followed by something. Yippie! Please note that sarcasm. The monster wasn't normal from what I could see from the shadow splayed on the deserted road. When I turned ready to face the beast I was confused. Standing where the shadow ended was nothing. Nothing. I looked once more at the shadow before deciding it was a trick of the light. Maybe Halloween mixed with thoughts of the war were messing with my head. I shrugged it off walking once more towards my house.
Looking at my watch it showed the blinking numbers 11:22 before a sharp pain hit my back. I lay sprawled out on the pavement a line of blood trikling down my mouth leaving a metallic taste. I frantically looked around hoping to find the sight of the beast. Again there was nothing even as a restricting pain circled my torso lifting me in the air feet dangling. Hot breath tickled my face and before black enclosed my vision I heard a strange language being spoken and the feeling of cold pavement as I landed on the ground.
Hope you liked the first chapter!
