Shayne and Courtney walk through the forest, the ground covered in a thin blanket of white. The cold wind penetrates their skintight outfits as they trudge past many trees. Snowflakes dance through the wind as they slowly fall down. The snow crunches with every step they take.
Courtney points at some big trees in the distance. ''Look at the ground,'' she says. ''No snow.''
''Great, let's rest there,'' Shayne responds.
Together they walk towards the piece of uncovered ground. There's a couple of tall trees bending towards the same place, creating some nice cover from the snow.
Shayne sits down against a tree. He sticks his axe with the head into the ground.
Courtney sits down next to him and scooches her butt next to Shayne's.
Shayne blows on his hands trying to keep them warm.
Courtney lays her head down on Shayne's shoulder.
Shayne looks at Courtney's cold pale hands, gently tucked into her sleeves. He grabs her hands and begins to rub them softly.
''What are we going to do next?'' Courtney asks with a sigh.
''I don't know,'' Shayne answers. ''There's no point in looking for Keith anymore.''
''We didn't even hear Keith's cannon. Lasercorn must've killed him in his sleep. The coward,'' Courtney tells annoyed.
''It's just us and Wes now,'' Shayne tells.
''That's not going to be an easy fight,'' Courtney figures.
''No, definitely not if he still has the sword I saw him take at the beginning.''
Courtney stares at the tree roots popping out from the snow in front of her. ''Shayne?'' she asks.
''yes?''
''Say we are able to beat Wes, what are we going to do then?''
Shayne looks at Courtney with a half smile. ''Then you will go back to your district, say goodbye to Jango for me and live the life that all the other tributes couldn't have.''
''But without you,'' Courtney says with a red face.
Shayne looks in front of him, not knowing what to say. He looks at the pure white snow covering the ground between the trees. ''hide,'' he says terrified as someone appears in the distance. Through the falling snow he sees a dark figure walking.
Just as Shayne and Courtney want to move towards the cover of the trees, it's already too late. The dark figure turns towards them and starts running. Just now they can clearly see that it's Wes and he's holding a big shiny blade.
''We have to run,'' Shayne tells while helping Courtney up. He grabs his axe and they start running back to the cliff.
''The bow!'' Courtney says in panic. ''I forgot it.''
''Don't worry about it,'' Shayne tells while running behind Courtney. He looks at the white forest in front of them. No sign of the cliff so far. He looks over his shoulder, only to see Wes gaining in on them. Shayne quickens his pace until he's about next to Courtney.
Courtney keeps running in a grueling pace.
Shayne locks eyes with Courtney. He can hear the crunching of snow behind him get increasingly louder. They are never going to outrun Wes.
''Courtney, you need to run to the cliff!'' Shayne says while trying to keep his breathing steady.
''What?'' Courtney says while looking at Shayne.
''Run to the cliffs and hide.''
''What about you?''
''Don't worry, I'll meet you there,'' Shayne tells.
Courtney takes a look over her shoulder and sees Shayne slowing down.
Shayne glances over his shoulder. He sees Wes still sprinting as fast as he can. As Shayne slows down his pace even more, he hears his rival's footsteps get slower as well. Sprinting becomes running, running becomes jogging and jogging becomes walking. As the two almost stand still, Shayne turns around. He sees Wes, who has also stopped running, just 3 yards away from him, wipes of dirt on his face and a big sword in his hand. Just as they stop running, the wind lays down. The cold forest yields no sounds but the soft muffled crackling of leaves. And amidst all stands Wes, drops of sweat on his forehead and wearing the same clear black outfit as Shayne.
Shayne stares into Wes's eyes for what seems like an eternity. Something about the stern focused look in his eyes seems off. Like Wes is not the same person he once knew.
''What happens now?'' Shayne asks while trying to sound more tough than he feels right now.
There's a small sullen silence that creates an uneasy tension.
''Now we take another step towards the end,'' Wes answers while lifting up his sword. He takes a few paces in Shayne's direction.
Shayne takes a few steps back, tightening the grip on his axe and holding one hand in front of him. ''Wes, stop we don't have to fight,'' he speaks defensively.
Wes sighs. ''As much as I hate to fight you, only one of us is going to get out of this mess and that has to be me,'' Wes tells.
''And you're willing to do anything to win? Even throw away your humanity?'' Shayne asks skeptically.
''I need to look at the big picture Shayne,'' Wes answers.
''Then what is the big picture? tell me,'' Shayne asks, trying to understand Wes's motive.
''I can't tell that here, I just need to win,'' Wes tells while taking a big step forward.
''Shayne takes a step backwards, angrily. ''So this is just it? You're just going to kill me as if you've never known me? As if we've never been friends?'' he asks fiercely with a slightly raised voice.
Wes remains quiet.
''Are we even still friends?'' Shayne asks in anger. ''Who am I even to you?''
Wes looks at Shayne with a confused but determined expression on his face. ''You're,'' Wes sighs, ''just another puzzle piece in this game.''
Shayne leaps forward and furiously swings his axe at Wes.
Wes deflects the axe with his sword. The two metal weapons make a clacking sound.
Shayne takes another swing, aiming for Wes's chest. The axe meets Wes's sword in the air with a resounding 'clang'. Shayne immediately takes another swing and knocks the sword out of Wes's hand.
Wes leaps towards Shayne and bashes him with his shoulder in the stomach.
Shayne falls backwards to the ground, the axe escaping from the grip of his hand. He quickly crawls to his feet, keeping his eyes aimed at Wes.
Wes runs forward and hits Shayne with a solid punch against the side of his face.
Shayne takes a step back and tastes the blood inside his mouth. He quickly ducks as Wes tries to punch again. Shayne rushes towards his opponent and punches him in the stomach.
Wes stumbles backwards and let's out a single cough. Before he can even react he gets punched in the face, knocking him against the ground.
Shayne jumps on top of Wes and immediately tries to punch him. To his surprise Wes catches his fist. Shayne tries to loosen his hand from Wes's grip. He let's out a small muffled scream as he feels a terrible pain in his leg. Wes has driven a hunting knife deeply into the side of his right upper leg.
Wes rolls Shayne to the side and climbs on top of him.
Shayne uses his hands to push him away. The pain in his leg is weakening his entire body. Just as Wes is able to overthrow Shayne there's the sound of a swing.
Wes's shoulders reach back and his teeth bite together. His eyes close as he falls face-first to the ground next to Shayne. Shayne's axe is sticking in his back, just above Wes's backpack. A cannon sounds.
In front of Shayne stands Courtney, shaking. Shayne looks at his leg, the knife still sticking into it. There's blood dripping from his leg onto the ground.
''Thank you,'' Shayne says as he looks at Courtney relieved.
''Your leg,'' Courtney says in an alarming voice as she stares at the wound.
''Yeah, it's not good,'' Shayne says with a shrill voice. He tries to carefully stand up.
''Here, let me help you,'' Courtney says while putting Shayne's arm around her shoulder.
Shayne groans from the pain as he stands up, leaning on his left leg and Courtney's hand grasping him around his hip.
Together they walk further towards the cliff, moving slowly and taking small steps.
After a couple yards Courtney begins to have trouble supporting Shayne's body. She trips over the rigid root of a tree and falls to the ground.
Shayne is able to hold onto the tree. He carefully turns his back to the tree and lowers his body unto the ground. He throws his head back, breathing deeply and a painful look on his face.
Courtney sits down in front of him and looks worried at the wound. The knife has pierced clothing as well as skin. There's a small line of black fabric around the knife that has a darker tone than the rest of the suit. Courtney looks at Shayne who is looking in agony at his leg. She anxiously grabs the ripped clothing and tears it further open, making the entire wound visible. The skin around the knife has a purple tint.
''Shayne this is really bad,'' Courtney says in panic. ''We need to do something. Should I try to pull the knife out?''
''No,'' Shayne immediately exclaims. ''For all we know that knife could have hit an artery or a vein. Keeping the knife in might be the only thing keeping me from bleeding out.''
''But we need to do something. You're bleeding,'' Courtney says with a tear in her eye.
''Can you get me some water and a piece of fabric, maybe from Wes's suit or something?''
Courtney nods. She stands up and sprints back to Wes's body. She hunches down at the body and looks at the sleeve. She looks around and sees the sword lying in the snow. She grabs the sword. The cold metal easily slides through the fabric. After making a little cut in the fabric she is able to tear the end of the sleeve off. As Courtney drops the blade she notices the backpack on Wes's back. She opens the backpack and starts to quickly take stuff out, hoping to find something useful. Eventually she takes out a small metal flask filled with water. With the flask and the piece of clothing she rushes back to Shayne.
Shayne, with shaking hands grabs the flask.
Courtney grabs his hands. ''I'll do it,'' she says while taking the flask out of his hands.
Shayne nods. He bites down and looks away.
Courtney opens the flask and pours some water on the wound.
Shayne groans in pain. He looks at his leg. He can see some bruising around the wound. He grabs the sleeve and rips a little hole in the side. Using his hands he stretches the fabric a little wider.
''What are you going to do?''
''I want to stabilize the knife,'' Shayne tells concentrated. He pulls the sleeve over his shoe and up to his knee.
Courtney can feel her heart beating frantically. She stands up and starts walking around.
Shayne pulls the sleeve over his wound and carefully puts the hole around the knife. He can feel the fabric tightening around his leg as he lets go.
Courtney sits back down in front of Shayne and looks at the wound. She sees a small stream of blood surge from the hole. The blood drips from Shayne's leg and falls to the ground, mixing with the snow.
''Shayne this isn't working. You need real medical help,'' Courtney tells distressed.
''It's going to be okay.''
''No Shayne, it's not. You need to get to the capitol, where they can treat you,'' Courtney tells with tears in her eyes.
Shayne pulls Courtney closer. He places his hands on her cheeks. Using his thumbs he wipes the tears off her eyes. ''I'm going to be fine. We're going to get through this, okay?'' he tells with a comforting look.
''But Shayne I don't want you to-''
''We're going to get through this.''
Courtney nods. She swallows hard. The cold wind has completely lain down. She grabs Shayne's hands and looks into his eyes.
Shayne feels a cold tingling as Courtney softly grabs his numb hands. He sits up straight.
Courtney moves closer towards Shayne until their noses almost touch. She leans in, so her forehead rests against his. A small smile appears as she looks into his eyes. She glances at his lips before looking back at his eyes.
Shayne closes his eyes. He can feel Courtney's warm breath on his lips.
''I can't live without you Shayne,'' Courtney whispers.
Shayne smiles. ''We can't live without each other.''
''That's right,'' Courtney tells softly. She pauses for a second as if she's hesitating. ''But I know you're stronger than I am,''
Shayne opens his eyes. ''What do you mean?'' he asks with a confused smile.
''It means I love you,'' Courtney whispers.
Even in the cold snow Shayne feels a warmth through his entire body as he hears those words. ''I love you too,'' he speaks softly. He closes his eyes and leans in. But just as quick as the warmth entered his body it also escapes as Courtney moves away and stands up. She turns around and runs away.
Shayne looks at her, confused. Did I say something wrong?
''Courtney!'' he yells with a shrill voice.
He looks down. In his hand lays the cold metal necklace with the key. Why did she give it back? Where is she going? Shayne starts to panic.
''Courtney!'' he calls again. He crawls to his feet and tries to run after Courtney. To his amazement, the sleeve around his leg actually seems to help. He isn't able to run at full speed but by putting most of his weight on his left leg, he is able to kind of keep up with Courtney.
The thick snow crunches as he weaves through the forest. In the distance he can see Courtney sprinting towards the big open area of the cliff. Shayne starts to quicken his pace. He can feel his leg starting to hurt as he stumbles through the dense forest air. He looks down. There's some blood pouring down his leg.
Twigs and branches assail his face as he nears the side of the forest. He staggers out of the forest and into the open rocky area, breathing heavily and his heart pounding as if it's about to explode. He looks around and sees Courtney running to the left side of the cliffs, away from the waterfall. He sprints after her, not caring about the pain in his leg anymore. He tries to yell but his dry throat won't let any words through. Shayne's heart skips a beat as he sees Courtney leap off the cliff and be pulled down by gravity. He slows down his pace and falls to the ground, as if his entire body gets beaten down. Tears start to form in his eyes. He wants to scream but his throat is locked. He starts crawling to the side of the cliff. His body freezes as he hears the clear sound of a cannon. It's over. He won, but he lost. He can feel every fiber, every muscle, every cell in his body break. A tear rolls down his cheek. This is not how it was supposed to end. Courtney wasn't supposed to die.
He quickly crawls backwards, away from the cliff, away from everything. He gets up and sprints into the forest as fast as he can. He keeps on running until he can't bear the pain in his leg anymore. A tree catches him as he tumbles over. With his back against the tree he slides down to the cold ground, his watery eyes slowly closing in the process.
