Neku's POV

As I opened my eyes, I tried to register where I was. The Scramble again? Where's that other kid?

"Are we still on track with the goods? What? You already got them in!?"

Oh, he's on the phone. Wait a minute... How did he place a call!? And who's he talking to?

"The scramble... Which areas? ...Sealed? In that case... ...and the time limit at... And? Anything else?"

Wait, is he reporting in to the Reapers? Definitely shady... I can't tell what he's thinking. ...... Or can I? Maybe another scan will turn something up....

But then again, after what happened yesterday when I scanned him.... I don't want to see anything like that again.

...I could still get some valuable information from it, though...

Pushing down my thoughts, I saw him turn towards me the second I scanned him.

Ow ow ow ow ow-

Not again! Please...

Ow...

"Neku, it's not your fault..."

Warm arms were wrapped around me, holding me close.

"B-but if I weren't here, then h-he wouldn't have le-"

The arms held me out at a length, and deep blue eyes peered into my own sternly. "Neku, it's NOT your fault. Don't blame yourself. Your father and I just didn't get along well, okay? It's not your fault that he left."

"Mom... are... are you going to leave me too?"

The woman in front of me stared at me for a moment, then pulled me in again, kissing my forehead gently. "Your mom isn't going anywhere. I'm staying right here, Neku."

"Do... do you promise?" I whispered into her shoulder.

"I promise."

"-ku, hey! Wake up! Neku!"

I winced as I felt my head throbbing with pain when I opened my eyes. Joshua was looking down at me in concern, which quickly changed once he noticed I was looking back.

"Is this going to become a problem?" Joshua spoke up. "I didn't see this happen last week."

Finding myself unable to speak, I shook my head in response to him. It was at that moment that I realized I wasn't in the Scramble anymore. I was also pretty quick to notice that there wasn't any ground underneath me as I thought there would be.

"Put. Me. Down." I hissed.

"Fine, fine."

Joshua set me on the ground, and I tried to stand up. This, in itself, turned out to be a mistake, since I apparently wasn't as ready as I thought to stand on my own. My thoughts ground to a halt as I felt Joshua catch ahold of my wrist and my back.

"Careful, dear. It seems you're not as prepared for this as you thought."

The smirk playing on Joshua's lips made me want to punch him, but I resisted since I realized it would hurt me more than it would hurt him. It's not as if I mind this, though-

Wait, what am I thinking?!

"Nekky, are you... blushing?"

"N-no!"
