Chapter 3
“Hey, Emberpaw, Darkstar wants to see you in his den,” a soft voice said.
Emberpaw looked up at the cat who’d spoken. Leafpaw was standing above her, still the size of a kit. Her eyes were wide as Emberpaw nodded to her and walked past her; there must’ve still been some tension between Emberpaw and the rest of the Clan after she’d been so harsh when Dusktide died.
She padded over to Darkstar’s den and peered inside. Darkstar was sitting upright in the center of the den, and his eyes were lowered to a half-eaten bird at his paws.
“Darkstar, you wanted to see me, right?” Emberpaw moved into the den.
“Yes, Emberpaw,” he mewed. “Come in further and sit down.”
Emberpaw felt shivers creeping up her spine as she sat down in front of him. Dying sunlight painted the floor of the den red, and she could see her form as a shadow.
“You and your brothers are… different. You have the speed of WindClan, the swimming skills of RiverClan, the silence and cunning of ShadowClan, and the climbing skills of ThunderClan. That and your temper make you unique. But it’s time you learn why StarClan is scared that you’ll end the Clans.”
“What?” Emberpaw demanded.
“Along with the blood of the clans, you all have a power, and the power wasn’t granted to you by StarClan. You were born with it, but it was given to you before you were born.”
“Darkstar… That makes no sense,” Emberpaw breathed. Her memory briefly flickered back to when Yellowfang had spoken to her in StarClan.
“I know, it’s confusing, but I’m just telling you because I think you deserve to know. Your Clanmates really have no reason not to trust you just because your parents weren’t loyal to their Clans.”
“What’s your point?” Emberpaw mewed irritably.
“My point is that you need to be nice to your brothers. I mean, the cats of all the Clans don’t like you, and you’re in the same situation as them, so you should be closer to them, don’t you think?”
“This is why you wanted to talk to me? Why should I be closer? They don’t like me.”
“They don’t like you because… well, it isn’t your fault that they don’t like you. That’s all I will say about that, but you have a power just like them, and you should probably be kind to them, even if they don’t want to be kind back.”
“I’ve always been kind to them, if I was even talking to either of them. They avoid me all the time and I’ve always thought that siblings should stick together, but Sparrowstripe and Ravenheart hardly talk, so I’ve just assumed that…” Emberpaw stopped rambling as Darkstar flicked his tail and stood up.
“Why don’t you go find one of your brothers and go do something with them? I’m sure they won’t mind.”
Emberpaw wasn’t so sure, but she said nothing and headed out of the leader’s den.
Out in the clearing, she sat and looked around. Blackpaw was lying across the clearing, only recognizable by his bright blue eyes. Beside him, Leafpaw was crouched over a rabbit. They were sharing prey? Emberpaw felt a smirk break onto her face.
She looked around and saw Shadepaw talking to Stonepaw and Grayfern. His eyes were sharp with annoyance, most likely at Stonepaw. The apprentice was bouncing with excitement; he must’ve been going to the Gathering in a few nights.
Emberpaw padded over to Shadepaw first. The tom turned his head toward her and rolled his eyes. “What do you want?” His voice was laced with fear… or confusion. Emberpaw tilted her head.
