The Hunters

Chapter 2

Maya's POV

While mom and Shawn were away I stayed with the Matthews. The entire time I fantasized about what it would be like now that we had Shawn.

Shawn and my mom came back and the first thing we did was move from our old apartment. Shawn had surprised my mom and me with a new one.

It was a three-bedroom with enough space for a mini art studio in my room. I moved into one room while my mom and Shawn moved into the other. We hadn't yet decided what to do with the third bedroom.

Life was so much different with Shawn. He had a job so my mom didn't have to work as much as she used to. We ate family dinners and spent time together on weekends. 

For the first time in my life, I didn't have to worry about the electricity or water being cut. We could afford to buy new clothes. And best of all, I didn't feel left out on Father's Day. I know Shawn isn't my father, but he's the closest thing I've ever had to one that actually cared about me. He loved me so much and I loved him so much and I wanted to show him on his birthday.

It was a Saturday but I woke up early to make him breakfast. My mom came down and told me we were throwing a surprise party for him and that I was in charge of decorating because she had to go to work. Then Shawn came down at 8.

"Happy Birthday, Shawn!" My mom and I shouted.

"Gee, thanks, guys." He said hugging us.

"I've got a shift at the diner. I'll be back later today to celebrate. I love you." My mom said.

"Ok, honey. I love you too," he said kissing her.

"Wow, kiddo. Did you make all this?" He said looking at the food.

"Yeah, I made it for you. Do you like it?"

"Yeah, I love it." He said hugging me.

"So later I'm going to the Matthews. You should come." I told him.

"I'd love to, but I should be celebrating with you and your mom for my first birthday with you guys."

"That's ok. I'll just tell mom to go there too. Don't you think Mr. Matthews would be excited to see you?"

"You're right. Cory would just about die if he didn't see me on my birthday."

Later that day I told Shawn I had to get a few things. I went to the Matthews and started setting up the party. Topanga even made a cake. I texted Shawn to tell him that I decided to just go to the Matthews and that he can just come over by himself.

Shawn's POV

I got Maya's text so I started going over to see the Matthews.

"SURPRISE!" People popped up from behind couches and tables and curtains as I opened the door.

"Woah! What's all this?!" I asked before a familiar face came up to me.

"It's a birthday party for my little brother. What's up buddy?" He said.

"Jack! What are you doing here man?"

"Come on. I couldn't miss a surprise birthday party for my brother."

Maya walked up to me.

"I didn't know you had a brother," she said smiling.

"Yeah, this is my brother Jack Hunter. Jack, this is your niece, Maya."

Jack and Maya talked for a little bit. Katy came in and met Jack. Then we had cake and I opened presents.

I got another Cory and Shawn ornament from Cory. Topanga gave me a photography book. Jack gave me our father's ring. Katy gave me a new leather jacket and a kiss. Maya got me the best gift of all. She gave me a card.

Dear Dad,

          Happy Birthday! You are the best dad ever. I love you so much.

"Maya, did you just—"

She cut me off with a hug. 

"I love you, Dad."

"I love you too, Maya."
