The Hunters

Chapter 3

Maya's POV

Shawn's brother Jack was staying with us for a couple days while he's in New York. He wanted to stay at a hotel so as not to bother us but Shawn insisted. We were all sitting in our living room talking after a late Sunday night dinner.

"So tell me about yourself, Maya. What are some of your interests?" Jack asked curiously.

"I love art. I like to draw and paint," I told him.

"Is it any good?" He asked.

"It's ok, I guess," I responded.

"Ok?" Mom said."Maya's won a few awards along with a college scholarship."

"My niece, Maya Hunter, making a name for herself," Jack said proudly and slightly amused.

"Hart," I said quietly.

"Huh?" Jack asked.

"My last name is Hart, not Hunter," I told him.

"Oh, I'm sorry, it was my mistake. I thought, uh..." he said trailing off at the end.

We sat in awkward silence until Shawn cleared his throat.

"So, Jack, how's JC doing?" Shawn asked.

"He's doing great. He's just learning to walk."

"Who's JC?" My mom and I both ask at the same time.

"My son, Jack Connor Hunter.  I would have brought him but he got a little sick so he stayed home with his mom. But I have a photo on my phone somewhere," he said as he pulled out his phone to look for it.

"I didn't know your brother had a baby. You need to tell us about things like this," Katy said playfully hitting Shawn's arm.

"JC, huh?" I said. "Of all names, why'd you choose Jack Connor?"

"It's for my mom's husband. It's his last name and I wanted to include him somehow since he raised me," Jack responded. "Here's the photo," he said holding up his phone.

It was a picture of him on his 1st birthday with cake all over his face.

"He's so cute," I commented. "Mom, dad, I want a baby brother."

My mom laughed. "Well," she said pulling Shawn in for a kiss flirtatiously. "In order for that to happen, Shawn and I would have to have—"

"Stop! Don't continue your sentence. I'm going to bed now," I said getting up and giving everyone hugs before going to bed.

Two things crossed Shawn's mind that night. Why was Maya's last name Hart she was his daughter. And maybe he and Katy could have a baby.
