It was Friday morning, and my mom woke me up at five forty-five to put make-up over my bruises.

That morning, I limped to the bus and my mom told me not to tell anyone about last night. "Hey, Peeta!" Katniss called on the bus. Gale hadn't got on yet, so I sat next to her. "Yeah?" I asked. She examined my face. "You look paler then usual," she said. She wiped her hand on my face then looked at her hand. "Are you wearing make-up?" She suddenly brushed my forehead and saw a bloody bruise. "Peeta, what happened!" She cried. "It-it's nothing." I got up and walked to the back. Katniss looked back at me, and frowned. She got up and sat in the two-seat row in the back. So Gale wouldn't get to sit with us.

When she came over, I looked at the window. "Why do you have dry blood on your forehead?" She asked. I sighed. I couldn't tell her about my mom. "Can you keep a secret?" I ask. She nodded her head. "My-my mom...beats me." I told her. She gasped and cupped her hands over her mouth. "Peeta! Why haven't you told me!" I looked down. "Because I couldn't." I told her, thinking about what my mom told me. "You should totally stay with me this weekend." Katniss offered.

I would love to stay, but my mom and dad would never let me. "I'll try." I told her. She clapped her hands in excitement. "Can Gillian come too?" She asked. My mom would let Gillian go, of course. "Yes." I said.

When I got to school, it was the same thing. Katniss waved good-bye to Gale then ran over to me. "Okay, so you'll pack?" She asked. I nodded my head then got on the bus.

When I got home, my mom called me. I went over to her and knew what was coming. When I looked in the mirror upstairs I saw that the jaw of my mouth was bloody, and I couldn't close it. My forehead was bleeding again and my eye was blackened. My ear felt like it was about to fall off. It was bloody on the corner. I hurried and packed my stuff, and tried to sneak out. "Where are you going?" My dad asked. I looked over at him. "No-nowhere." I told him. "I asked you where you're going." He said firmly. I didn't say anything, just started walking. He suddenly pulled on my bag and pulled me back. He suddenly pushed me off the porch onto the ground. "Ow!" I cried. I got up and limped on both legs to Katniss' house.
