The ride to the airport the next morning was filled with pure emotion. At this point, Emily and I were running entirely on adrenalin. Both of us hadn't slept a wink all night long in anticipation of the journeys we were beginning today. We were now at the point of sleep deprivation where everything was becoming hilarious and we turned into two giggly girls.
The closer we got to the airport, though, the less we giggled and the more serious the ride became. I knew when we had eventually stopped the car and parked that we would be one step closer to not seeing each other for a very long time. That moment came sooner than I would have ever imagined it could.
After I found a spot in long term parking C - I had to remember that, don't let yourself forget that Caroline - we both headed for the trunk of the car and removed our things. I felt a small tear prickle into the corner of my eye and I shut the lid. "I guess we really are doing this." I said with a small smile on my face. Emily glanced back at me and only half smiled.
"Who would have ever guessed that you and me, the girl's who always acted perfect and never caused a problem, would be doing something like this?" She shook her head in disbelief for only a moment, then began walking to the bus stop. I followed after her just letting my mind ramble on about all the things I was leaving behind, including my current life.
We rode the bus back to the main check in area and promptly went about getting our tickets and confirming our visas. I finished the process before Em because I had only brought carry-on items while she had brought an entire closet. When she was finished we went through security and then headed straight for the terminals. With each step, our seperation become closer and closer. This was my best friend and now I wouldn't be able to see her for a very very long time.
We arrived at her terminal first. The area was filled with people sitting around reading magazine and fiddling around with their phones. Everyone seemed so bored and just so ready to leave. Emily walked over to a couple of seats that were empty and I followed. For a few minutes all we did was just sit in silence. Neither one of us not really knowing what to do.
"Are you sure you wouldn't want to come to India?" She looked at me as she asked the question. Her face was filled with sadness and I could see that her eyes were beginning to become watery.
"Are you sure you wouldn't want to come to England?" I countered. She laughed at this and gently shook her head no, and dropped her eyes to the ground. I heard her sniffle a couple of times before I felt her crush me into a hug. I turned half way in my seat that I could make the hug a proper one and not just have hugging my shoulders.
"You know they say that a true hug is like two human souls touching each other? It's a moment of pure connection where you completely open yourself up to another person and allow yourself to be completely vulnerable." She layed her head down on my shoulder and squeezed me in tighter.
"Em, you're my best friend and that's never going to change. Distance will be between us but the memories we have made together will always be in our hearts and neither of us will ever forget them. This will be hard not getting to see you that often but we will stay in touch and eventually we'll find our ways back to each other just like we always do. We both have to grow though. We have to figure out what our lives are supposed to be like."
She nodded. "Caroline, please... just don't forget me, ok?" she said just slightly above a whisper.
"I won't ever forget about you. I pinky promise." I held up my pinky and she wrapped hers around mine. "Best friends forever", I said still not releasing her small finger. She smiled weakly and then wiped the tears away from her face.
"Well... I guess you need to head to your terminal now. It's about time for your flight to start boarding isn't it?" I checked my ticket, boarding began at 9:20 and it was now 9:00. I nodded back to her and stood up slowly.
"As soon as you get off your plane and have your things with you, send me an email and let me know that your ok and things. Also, when you get a new cell number let me know it." I said in my motherly voice.
"Ok, ok mom. I will don't worry,"
I gave her one last hug that lasted for a few seconds, then grabbed my bags and walked towards my terminal. When I finally arrived, they had already began boarding and my group was being let on board. I walked over and got in line with all of the proper papers available. They checked them all and then pointed me towards the airplane.
When I had finally found my seat I stashed my luggage away in the overhead bin. I took my seat, which was luckily by the window, and prayed that no one else was sitting in the row with me. Of course, that didn't last long as the two seats beside me quickly became occupied by a couple who were leaving for what I assumed was their honeymoon. I buckled my seat belt and grabbed my headphones placing them over my ears, allowing the music to completely fill the space around me. This was going to be a long flight and hopefully I would be able to get some sleep before I arrived in England the next morning.
