The two boys sat alone in a small apartment. It was an unusually hot day, even for Texas, and the windows were open letting in an unhelpfully warm breeze. They had just finished an intense round of Team Deathmatch in Call of Duty, and they lay sprawled gracelessly on the couch, wondering what to do next.
“Dave, don’t you guys have air conditioning? Jesus it’s like 200 degrees in here,” John whined, sliding limply off the couch to sit on the carpet. They had both long since undressed, and now only wore boxer shorts and their respective pairs of glasses.
“I told you dude it’s broken. You’ll get used to it eventually, this is about the hottest it gets.” He replied as he wiped away the sweat on his forehead. “Once school starts it’ll be a lot more tolerable.”
John sighed and closed his eyes. He’d only been living here for a few months and it was proving to be a very hard transition. He’d gotten used to the time difference, but he still had trouble sleeping with Dave six feet away from him. John was an only child, so he’d never had to share a room with anybody, and Dave wouldn’t be his first choice for a roommate. Not because he didn’t like Dave, oh no. John liked Dave very much. Maybe just a little too much for his own comfort.
They sat in silence for a little while, watching the blank TV screen and roasting quietly. Dave’s Bro wasn’t home, and probably wouldn’t be until the next day. You never knew with him.
*******((This is the part where I’m writing this and it’s two days later and 1:30 in the morning so I have no idea what I’m doing))***********
Dave was the first to move, rolling over to sit on the floor beside John. The two weren’t uncomfortable being in close contact, and often leaned against one another when sitting together.
“Hey John, have you ever kissed a guy?”
John was caught so off guard that he jumped, hitting his elbow on the coffee table with a loud bang. He swore quietly then returned his bewildered gaze to Dave, who was blushing ever so slightly.
“Um… No, not… Well I never kissed one first if that’s what you mean.” John was completely red in the face and could barely keep eye contact. The truth was, he’d only ever kissed boys, but there was no way in hell he wanted Dave to know that.
Dave didn’t say anything. Now it sort of just felt...awkward. "Well...um..." He didn't like pausing so often, it actually irritated him a lot. Made him too self-conscious.
“Why are you even asking me that Dave?” John tried to sound casual, but his heart was in his throat. He was never good at reading expressions, especially Dave’s.
“Well, I… Um… No reason. I was just wondering you know. I was curious.” John stared.
They sat in silence again, but this time it was much more uncomfortable. Dave was struggling to find something to say and John was panicking. What was Dave implying? Did he know he was gay? DID HE HAVE A CRUSH ON HIM? Dave looked down, contemplating what to say next. He didn’t want to offend John, and he sure as fuck wasn’t going to embarrass himself any more. Another minute passed without a word. John was sweating even more now, trying to fend off the heat and tension all at once.
