My Fantasy

I climbed up the cherry tree

feeling troubled and unprepared

for what was yet to come

however I was quite young,

naive, full of greed,

and only fifteen.

My eyes grew.

The boy passing by

looked at me with dilated blacks.

I smiled and said,

"Want to play with me, Ted?"

We played until it was time

to bid each other farewell.

We played each day, inventing games galore.

Oh, did we soar!

Soon, he left.

Maybe I should have caught him.

Maybe I should have let him go instead.

A decade passed.

I had matured.

I had grown.

I was strolling by

when I saw him.

Ted, with his eyes wide again,

gawking at me.

Suddenly, I time-travelled to when I was a
child again.

I went up to him, smiled and said,

"Hello, Ted. Come to play again?"

Months passed

and hearts were stolen.

The moonlight was danced in

and the aisle was walked on.

A last name was changed.

Children were born and feelings grew.

Soon, I knew what it meant to be human.

Six more decades passed.

"You've become old",

at least that was what I was told.

I became a grandmother

with no one to hold.

I walked along the stream

to see Ted staring at me.

I walked up to him,

smiled sadly and said,

"Hello, Ted. Why don't you come play again?

I've been awaiting your arrival

and have been met with nothing

but a tombstone filling my vision.

It's been great, my love.

I've loved you for long enough.

Now I long

to sing our song

while dancing in the moonlight

like we used to.

Do you remember it as well as I do?"

I kissed his forehead

then walked away

to meet my near fate

but not on that day.

A few days passed.

I met Ted again

in a mirage-like dream,

feeling carefree again.

We danced in the moonlight

and were still full of life.

Ted smiled at me

then said,

"It's time to play again

for one last time."

We played from dawn to dusk

until, at last, we were done.

My eyes closed,

taking me to an eternal sleep.

A guide stood by and held out their hand,

taking me to the unknown land

of the dead

alongside my beloved Ted.
