We shoot.

We stab.

We shout.

We kill.

One by one, the men fall to their deaths.

One by one, the remaining residents of the town fight back.

Minute by minutes everything is at risk.

Morning is only a few hours away.

Night is nearly over.

Kirk and I clear out the library.

We add five more people to the group.

We head to the apartments and clear it out, nearly the entire building still thriving.

We clear out the houses next.

Almost every house on each block is empty, with no survivors.

A few houses however hold families, or lone survivors.

We clear out the yards, and already half of the town is clean.

Freaks march inside like an army going to war.

Every person lost is another story destroyed.

At one point Kirk splits away from the group.

An explosion, followed by a tall church tower crumbling to the ground.

We'll get to that soon.

We reach the gate.

Amy.

Trapped under the gate, bloody.

The group lifts the gate, and slides her out.

She's unconscious.

A small group carries her to the apartment building.

We repair the gate, and by the time it's functional, it's already morning.

Most of the group splits apart, back to their houses to clean up.

Kirk's still missing.

I head to where the church used to stand.

All that remains is rubble.

The distant smell of burning flesh.

A hand poking out from the rubble.

I tap the hand.

No reaction.

I walk around the rubble, and the door lies on the ground.

I pull the door away.

I found Kirk.

Rubble sitting atop him, his arm held down.

Bloody.

Black eyes, blood streaming from his nose and mouth.

Torn clothing.

Slash marks on his arms and face.

I run back to the first house I see.

A woman sitting outside with two little children, one clean, the other dirty.

She dunks a rag into water, and cleans the dirty child's face.

I slow down once I reach the yard.

"Excuse me!"

She watches me come closer, still wiping the kids face.

"What's wrong?"

"I found Kirk!"
