The sun shines through the window, forcing me awake. I roll over, to see Matt sliding out from the covers.
"What're you doing in here? I thought you were sleeping on the couch? It's pretty comfortable isn't it?" I ask. He stops, and turns to look at me.
"I was. I had a nightmare. The other doors were locked, but your door wasn't, so I went inside. The lamp was still on, so I thought you'd be awake. You were asleep, with that book on the floor. I put it on the bedside table for you." he says, pointing to the bedside table
"Okay, but why were you under the covers?"
"It was cold, I was still like half-asleep, and I didn't want to go back out there alone. I'm still not used to sleeping calmly anymore, I can barely forget what happens outside."
"Okay, I understand." I say, getting out of bed.
"Sorry if I made you uncomfortable, or I scared you."
"You didn't. I completely understand why you wanted to be near someone. I get it. It still takes me around an hour to fall asleep. From being tired. I constantly check the windows to make sure nothing's out there. But they are there, hiding." I explain, taking the book, and walking with Matt into the kitchen.
"Thanks for understanding." he whispers, taking a seat at the table.
"I'll get the girls." I say, walking up to Kacey's door.
"Jay," Matt cries, making me stop and face him, "do you miss Zach?"
I look down, and sigh.
"Everyday, but we gotta continue without him." I say, knocking on the door.
"Wake up, Kacey." I hollar, knocking on the door. I hear her groans, and the noisy bed moving. I move to Sam's door, knocking loudly.
"Sam, wake up." I say, realizing the door is unlocked. I push it open, and see Sam slowly walking into the bathroom.
"Sam?" I whisper. I take a step inside, and watch her bend over at the sink, the water running.
"Sam?" I whisper again. She turns around quickly, water going everywhere.
"Get out!" she screams. She's wearing a light green mask. I turn around, and run, slamming the bedroom door shut behind me.
"What'd you get in trouble for?" Matt asks, smirking.
"I saw Frankenstein." I gasp. Matt laughs, and moves to Kacey's door. He knocks lightly, and waits for an answer. The door unlocks, and opens slowly. Matt jumps into the room, knocking Kacey to the floor with a thud. Matt silently laughs, reaching down to help her up. She hits his hand away, and stands up herself.
"Good morning." she murmurs, walking past Matt into the kitchen.
"You can have a small meal, then you all set out for the house. I'll stay behind and clean up, maybe neaten some rooms. If you're not back by night, I'm guessing you're still getting over, you've been overrun, or you're all sleeping over." Sam says, opening her door. Matt jogs into the kitchen, and grabs a handful of muesli bars. Kacey takes an apple, and a sandwich. I take nothing. Kacey takes a sniper rifle. Matt takes the bat Zach had found, as well as two pistols. I take the shotgun, found on Blaire.
We set out for the front door, about to venture back to the Dead Side, the place we were when everything went down. The entire island was overrun, and people who could travel, like us, managed to escape to the upper island. There're still plenty of Freaks up top, but it's better than the other side, the streets are piled with them, buildings, everything.
