The loud, shrill beeping of my alarm jolted me out of a dreamless sleep.

I sighed quietly, rolling over to look at the gray numbers on my alarm.

7:30

I slapped the snooze button roughly before begrudgingly climbing out of bed. Shivering as my otherwise warm feet came into contact with the ice cold floor.

I pulled on a bathrobe to fight away the chill of my room as I made my way out of my room, down the stairs to my kitchen.

I lived in a fairly small two bedroom house.

My house seemed too empty to me at the moment, as only my stuff remained after my friend Roxann moved out. She had met her soulmate about a year ago now and had finally removed all of her stuff last month. Roxanne moved in with her soulmate Randy about two months ago.... Randy.... Such a basic name.... I hated it. I hated him.... Not that I was bitter.... Totally not. I was happy for Roxanne but Randy was a jerk.... But he made her happy so I never say anything.

They live somewhere in the countryside now and I live alone.

I had yet to put an ad out for a new roommate so I was going to remain alone for a very long time most likely.

I shook my head to clear it of my thoughts as I started the pot of coffee, my fingers tapping against the table as I watched the coffee slowly drip into the pot.

I decided against just standing there and waiting for my coffee to finally brew, making my way back upstairs to change and maybe grab a quick shower....

After I showered, changed clothes, etc, I made my way back downstairs for my coffee.

I poured the black liquid into my coffee cup before returning the pot to its original place. My hands warming from the hot liquid inside the cup, I walked over to my futon which was positioned in front of the window, taking a seat I gazed out at the rainy atmosphere.

A small sigh escaped my lips as I took a sip of my hot coffee, enjoying the slight burn it gave as it slid down my throat.

The rattle of the fire escape alerted me that something was coming up the ladder.

I smiled lightly as the familiar face of the stray tabby cat popped up from the fire escape ladder.

I opened the window, allowing the little wet blob of fur into my apartment.

" Hi, Morty." I cooed, scratching the tabby cats rather large ears.

As I couldn't see any color, I didn't want to name him after a color just in case I was wrong. So I named him Mortimer.... But I call him Morty.... Mortimer was the name of the boss I had when I worked at a grocery store. He was pudgy and had large ears, not unlike the stray cat that I found in a box so long ago.

Mortimer technically wasn't allowed to live with me, so he stayed outside until mornings and nights, when I'd let him in to eat. He's never late to a feeding, so we always eat together.

" Come on." I said, shutting the window after him as I stood up and made my way back into the kitchen.

Morty followed me into the kitchen, rubbing against my legs as I poured some cat food and old kitten formula into his bowl for him, scratching his ears before I popped a piece of toast into the toaster for myself.

Morty began to eat while I just leaned against the counter, waiting for my toast to be done as I let out a small yawn.

" You didn't come home last night so I got worried and ate without you. You can't do that to me Morty. I get too worried." I murmer before taking another sip of my coffee.

Morty obviously didn't reply as he continued to eat, his ears flicking as I spoke though.

I shook my head and finally my toast popped.

" We need to work on your communication skills, Morty." I say playfully before taking my toast out of the toaster.
