The walk to work wasn't necessarily a long trip. My apartment rested smack dab in the middle of town which made walking to work easy for me. Especially since the diner was only three blocks away.
Although on days where it rained, the fact that I couldn't afford a car became.... troublesome. But, it's a good way to stay in shape....I guess...
I pulled my coat tighter around myself, shivering silently as the rain pounded down around me, blurring my vision slightly.
A sigh escaped my lips as I heard an overly excited shriek and two couples hugged in the middle of the sidewalk.
I smile at them as I walk by, giving a wave to show that I was happy for them.
Finding your soulmate was nothing to be taken lightly. It was the greatest moment in everyone's lives....or so I'm told.... frequently.
My own mom and dad had met when they were sixteen and had been together ever since. But I was an only child, despite how....active... their love life was.
They'd often tell me stories about how they met and what meeting your soulmate was like. When I was little it sounded amazing... But now that I'm in my twenties and still haven't found my mate, it just gets annoying....not that I'm bitter.
As I walk past yet another couple I let out a breath of annoyance before begrudgingly entering the cafe where Margo was already sitting with her husband Ronald who smiled kindly at me as I entered.
" Good morning, Layla. It is a beautiful day, isn't it?" Ronald said as he awkwardly rubbed the back of his neck. Ronald was only a year older than Margo, the two had met in England where Ronald had been teaching as an English professor. Margo was there on a vacation with her mother, they happened to meet at a bakery where Margo and her mother were. The rest is the same as everyone else's stories, they felt a pull to touch the other person hand and when they did, they could instantly see color. They got married five months later and moved to New York instead.
I let out a soft breath of annoyance before giving him my best fake smile.
" It's raining but yeah. It's not a bad day." I replied after a moment which made Ronald's smile falter but it quickly returned as Margo took his hand. I glanced down at their entwined hands and frowned, silently wondering what it was like and maybe even slightly jealous....not that I was bitter.
" I'll get to work." I said to relieve some of the awkwardness.
Ronald and Margo only nodded in reply as I walked away.
Ronald always made things awkward when I was around because he didn't know what to talk about since I didn't have a soulmate and couldn't see colors. He couldn't talk about his flower garden, what color he should paint his porch, nope. Only English. And after a while I grew tired of only talking about how interesting English was so I avoided conversation at all costs.
I pulled my hair up into a high ponytail before tying the apron around my waist, just as the bell to the diner jingled.
I put on my best fake smile as I walked out into the cafe, hesitating a little at the two couples that were newly seated at one of booths together. Both couples were touching in one way or another at all times, whether it be holding hands or the girls laying their heads onto their soulmates shoulders.
I shuddered in disgust before plastering the fake smile back onto my face as I walked over to take the disgusting, lovey dovey couple's orders....
Okay.... Maybe I'm a little bitter....
