I hummed quietly as I strolled down the street. The buildings overshadowed the walkway, covering the deep grey cobblestone in cool darkness. A few carts ran along the middle now and then, bustling away while the goods they carried jostled around within.
It was not a very crowded area; few walked along the sidewalks, though it was peaceful and quaint. This part of town had people who truly weren’t horrible, and it was a lot cleaner and safer than most parts in the area. There was of course, a pub or two, and criminals are almost unavoidable. But, it paled in comparison to the crime that seemed to occur daily in most parts of London.
Though, recently there had been a spring of missing persons, presumed dead. I sighed at the thought, and then scrunched my nose; noticing just now the dark, crisp, scent of a demon. I scowled and pulled my hood farther down across my features.
Mmmeooww a soft voice echoed. I tilted my head trying to catch the sound again, just to make sure I wasn’t imagining things. Mmeooorrwww the soft noises of a kitten were brought to my perked ears yet again. I scanned the area, my enhanced eyesight catching the small ash grey kitten, only a few days old it seemed; its eyes were still closed. I glanced farther down the road and noticed a speeding carriage headed straight for the small ball of fur. With out a second thought I dashed forward.
I hadn’t been focusing where I was going and bumped into someone. I glanced back for a few moments, catching the dark-haired boys’ wrist to prevent him from falling as he let out an incredulous noise of discontent, “Sorry!” I called behind me as I continued to dash forward, the boy still looked at me glaring and disgruntled as he pat down his coat and mumbled, “Watch where you’re going,” in a slightly irate manner.
The carriage’s wheels rumbled against the stone of the road, with no indication of stopping anytime soon. I was about to dash forward into the road, when a tall black mass stepped in front of me; blocking me from my target.
“I believe you owe my master an apology,” a deep voice stated matter-of-factly.
I looked up and met the red eyes of the demon I’d scented earlier. I closed my eyes and shoved him aside, “Yes, yes, one moment,” I growled.
With one swift movement, I ran forward and rolled into the street, enveloping the small creature into my arms as I rolled. The carriage rolled over my cloak, ripping the end slightly. I grimaced as I stood, my shoulder having come dislocated by the sudden impact. I stood and held the kitten close; the small animal to frightened to even utter a single noise as it trembled in my hold.
I’d earned a few wondering looks from pedestrians walking the streets, but they all continued with their lives and strolled on. I caught the red eyes of the demon yet again, and made my way over.
The demon opened his mouth to say something, but I cut him off, “I apologize for my rude behavior,” I bowed then, “if you could be so kind as to forgive me for my actions, my lord?” I questioned politely, turning to the young blue-eyed boy wearing an eye-patch, whom I immediately new to be a noble due to his clothing and the way he held himself; like a king.
He narrowed his eyes at me, “Why did you just dive into that street, there appeared to be no reason for it,” he questioned, looking at me with the underlying belief that I was insane.
I smiled then, my face fully visible, as my hood had blown off during my little charade in the street. “The little one needed some assistance,” I state, moving my arm from the confines of my midnight black cloak, to reveal the small kitten tightly grasping my hand.
An audible intake of breath came from the dark figure beside the boy. My eyes flickered to him for a moment, to find the faintest hint of surprise on the demon’s features.
“That was in the street?” the boy questioned, “I hadn’t even noticed,” he whispered under his breath.
“His fur blends in with the cobblestone, my lord,” I explained.
“Don’t mock me,” he growled, his eyes directed towards me yet again, a glint in them now as they flashed with annoyance due to his negative exaggeration of my explanation.
“I wasn’t,” I sighed, “I was merely stating a fact that even your demon butler had missed,” I told him, getting a bit annoyed with his behavior.
The child’s eyes widened and then he stared at me levelly, his eyes blank and cold. With a single breath, my nose can already scent the delicious aroma of his soul emanating through his body. The boy had seen much, which was obvious… yet his soul remains untainted.
Just then two white cats popped from my cloak, one emerging on to each of my shoulders. The green-eyed cat stood on my left shoulder, and the blue-eyed one on my right. They sniffed curiously at the bundle I held in my hand, and studied the two beings before me. Another small intake of breath from the demon butler, was again audible, by me that is; the child remained unaware of his servants’ infatuation with the little cats that were in my possession. The little lord glanced at the two animals that perched on my shoulders, slight disgust clear as day clouding within his azure gaze.
The boy opened his mouth to speak again, but was, for once, cut off by his butler.
“My lord, maybe this would be a better discussion in a more private location,” he stated with a closed eyed smile.
“Hm, I suppose you’re right, Sebastian. Come along then,” he ordered, gesturing to me as well.
“And why should I?” I questioned, my annoyance growing at the human’s arrogance.
“Because I have a proposition,” he stated, glancing back at me, already a couple of feet away while his black suited butler followed.
I sighed, my curiosity eating away at my dignity, and stepped forward to follow the intriguing child with the delicious smelling soul.
