Well, I had my Russian class that day and
a swimming training (it was an activity day after all). Though I couldn't quite understand the purpose of his visit. What was his name again? Hoseok? Brother of my childhood friends Nana and Hyun?
I guess I'm not mistaken.I decided to talk to my mother about the weird conversation she had with (supposedly) my guest.
"Ma? Who exactly was that boy? Did you actually recognize him?"
"Oh, I was quite confused at first, to be honest. I had no idea that Hoseok is from the Jung family, though his smile really did seem familiar."
"Why would he want to meet me? Besides, it was quite random to casually visit a family friends' house and meet people whom he's never met before, don't you think?"
"Co, I really don't know. Maybe your dad had invited him and didn't tell us about it? Maybe he wanted you to meet someone your age? We're not as conservative to arrange your marriage, however, your dad seems to be somehow committed to carrying this tradition forward - even if it means that he's simply setting up some meetings with young fellas for you."
"Mom, stop. Cringe, please."
I wrinkled my nose."Daddy wouldn't do that, would he? I would feel so suffocated if you actually tried to choose a husband for me. Please, do not ever consider this option, ma. Promise me."
"Honey, I'm not giving you the best education possible and raising you this way to become someone's little wife. Don't you ever forget that." She seemed to be offended by my doubtful statement.
"I wouldn't let that happen, don't worry. It's you who will be picking and making decisions. Moreover, you always have to fight for what's yours and what's best for you."
She caressed my cheek gently."Okay, so if I'm the decision maker, I can invite someone tonight, just as you said?
Anyone I want?"
I took advantage of my mom's little pep talk. She sighed quietly.
"Yes, I guess so."
"I'm inviting him over then. I wanna know what he was up to." I was prepared for yet another lecture of hers, since, quite frankly, she liked to be the exception to the rules she loved to establish.
Be independent, but listen to mommy.
Make your own decisions, but consult them with mommy.
Choose whatever you want to do in life, but await mommy's approval.
It could be really annoying sometimes,
simply exhausting..."Young lady, first of all, this is my household. Second of all, as we've just settled, you don't know him and the reason for his unexpected visit. Lastly, you don't even have the possibility to contact him, in other words, you don't have his number. But impress me."
This time the sigh escaped my lips.
"I'll get his number, would you be so kind to ask Ms. Donovan to prepare the tea after all?"
My mom went to the dining room without saying another word. I was ready to take up the challenge, therefore I contacted my most trusted source of information.
"Daddy?"
"It's actually Mr. Kim. How can I help you?"
"Even better! Could you please send me the contact details of Hoseok Jung? I'm sure they are in my father's files. I would be immensely grateful. Mr. Kim."
