Just a Little Too Late

Adrien smiled. He had woken up in a good mood and was excited about patrol tonight with Ladybug. Plus, Plagg wasn't being as annoying as he usually was. In fact, he was actually sleeping, not complaining about a lack of camembert or explaining the finer points of cheese. There were no tests today, his father had even given him permission to hang out with Nino after school... life was good.

His father's secretary came to the dining table he sat alone at, eating his breakfast of world-class crepes prepared by the chef, and showed him the iPad, currently showing his father.

"Adrien, there will be no activities after school. I changed my mind. You are to go straight home in the limo and practice piano, nothing else. No tomfoolery," said Gabriel, gazing sternly at him.

Natalie clicked a button and his father's face disappeared.

Adrien sighed. This was just like his father. He didn't let him do anything except fencing and piano, or those photoshoots he honestly got tired of.

He shouldered his backpack and prepared to go to school, with a heavy heart.

At school, he slid into his seat in the still half-empty classroom. Nino was sitting in his seat, with headphones on, immersed in whatever new music he had discovered recently.

He tapped him on the shoulder - once, twice, three times, before Nino finally noticed, and slid his headphones off with his trademark grin. "Yeah, dude, what's up?"

"My father's not letting you come over today, again. Says I need to practice more piano." He watched the smile slip off Nino's face and felt sad again.

His friends Marinette and Alya came in, talking to each other. Marinette didn't seem nervous, like normal, for some reason. She just seemed excited. He wondered why.

"OMG girl, did you see Luka outside with Juleka today before school?" said Alya to Marinette. Marinette smiled. "I did!"

Adrien then heard Alya say, "You're excited, aren't you?" Marinette giggled. "Yeah, yeah I am." Their voices faded out as Adrien kept thinking about their words.

Luka was Juleka's brother. He was a cool guy, and he played guitar. They'd played together once, and sounded really cool. Was he coming to their class? And if so, why did he feel the slightest twinge?

Everybody else really liked him. Adrien did too. So did Marinette.

Ms. Bustier walked in with the purple-haired boy. "Class, this is Luka. He's transferred to our school and will be in your class." She paused and smiled. "Give him a warm welcome."

The class whooped and clapped, Marinette one of the loudest. Adrien joined in, smiling so that it made his teeth hurt.

"Hey, guys," said Luka in his slow, calm way of talking. "Hey, Marinette. It's nice to see you." Marinette blushed and waved.

Adrien looked at her and back at Luka. They were gazing at each other. What was going on?

Luka came and sat next to Marinette and Alya. "Hey, Adrien." Adrien kept a constant grin on his face as he greeted Luka back, "Hey, man."

Ms. Bustier started the lesson. Marinette and Luka kept talking all the while, in low whispers.

"You look so cute when you concentrate."

"So do you."

Ms. Bustier's voice faded out. Adrien felt angry, but he wasn't quite sure why. Did they like each other? Would Luka ask her out or something?
