It was an average day and Ladybug and Cat Noir had just finished a battle with an akuma. Ladybug had just returned everything to normal.
"M'Lady, would it be possible for you to join me tomorrow at the Eiffel Tower at noon?" Cat Noir asked, smiling at his fellow superhero.
"What for, Cat Noir?" Ladybug asked.
"Maybe we could eat lunch together tomorrow," he suggested.
Ladybug was about to reject him, when she remembered last time when she said 'maybe'. She hadn't shown up. It had really hurt Cat Noir's feelings.
"Alright, I'll meet you there tomorrow at 12," Ladybug said.
Cat Noir was surprised that she agreed so quickly, but he wasn't complaining. "Okay, I'll see you tomorrow, M'Lady," he said, running off with a big smile on his face.
Ladybug shook her head, smiling, as she watched him go.
"Silly Kitty," she said. She was surprised at how excited she felt at the prospect. She realized that she was glad she didn't refuse his offer.
She enjoyed Cat Noir's company on patrol and fighting akumas. It'd be great to spend lunch with a friend - even if he wanted more.
Once Cat Noir had gotten home, he snuck inside his room. "Plagg, claws in!" He was detransformed back into Adrian within a few seconds, and immediately began to pace, thinking about Ladybug. Plagg flew out, watching Adrian go.
"Plagg, Ladybug said yes! She actually said yes!" Adrien said excitedly.
Plagg snorted. "I'm aware, kid." Adrien looked at him, rolling his eyes. This was a typical interaction between them, and Adrian was used to Plagg... well, just being Plagg.
"Now you just have to woo her with camembert. That always works with the ladies."
"Thanks, Plagg," Adrien said sarcastically. His eyes lit up again, remembering that Ladybug had smiled, and she'd said yes. She'd said yes.
"I have to prepare the picnic basket, Plagg! I have to make it perfect for my lady."
"Just as long as you put camembert," said Plagg, not surprising Adrian in the least.
Meanwhile, Marinette was also pacing in her room, accompanied by her own kwami, trailing after her. "What if I put his hopes up? I'm in love with Adrien and only Adrien. I can't date Cat Noir, I can't kiss him... Oh no."
"What is it, Marinette," sighed Tikki with concern in her voice.
"What if he tries to kiss me? What do I do?" Marinette fretted, wringing her hands.
"Marinette, relax. It's going to be okay. You are going to have a great time with Cat Noir, just as you do saving Paris with him. There's a reason why you work together so well," said Tikki soothingly, her calming voice helping Marinette as it often did.
"You're right, Tikki," decided Marinette. "This will be fun."
The next day, Cat Noir showed up at their designated spot at exactly 12 o'clock, holding a picnic basket filled with sandwiches, croissants and other sweet treats She wasn't there, but he didn't worry. He couldn't expect Ladybug to show up exactly at the right time. She probably had important things to be doing, after all.
Five minutes went by, then ten, then twenty. Cat Noir started to become slightly anxious. Where was she? Could she have forgotten? He felt his stomach drop at the thought of it. No. He had to trust that his lady had a good reason.
But as forty minutes went by, he considered leaving. He was about to, in fact, when a voice interrupted him.
"Cat Noir, wait."
He turned. There she stood, sending butterflies into his chest like she always did. She was so breathtakingly beautiful, with those huge bluebell eyes and adorable pigtails.
"I'm sorry I'm late," she said, momentarily stunned by the look on his face. "At the last minute, I decided to make cupcakes. I'm sorry if I worried you."
"You didn't forget?" he breathed.
"I didn't forget," she reassured at him. He smiled, and she held up a pastry box. "Cupcakes." He laughed, and any tension between them broke.
He left her gaze and took out a checkered picnic blanket. He spread it out on the ground, and invited her to sit. "How chivalrous," she murmured with a giggle. She sat down, and so did he, facing her. He opened the picnic basket.
"So, M'Lady, here is what's on the menu today." He began to remove various items. "How did you get all this?" Ladybug gasped. It seemed like Cat had some baking skills up his sleeve.
He winked. "I have my ways, Bugaboo." He looked at the pastry box. "But what I don't have, is cupcakes."
Ladybug opened the box to reveal her hard work. Inside were Cat Noir and Ladybug themed cupcakes, some with paws, and some with spots. Cat Noir smiled. "These look delicious, M'Lady."
They began to eat, starting with the cupcakes. They were both surprised - finding they never ran out of things to talk about, even if they couldn't reveal each other's identities to each other. Tikki was right. They had fun, and there was a reason they worked together so well.
Time passed in the blink of an eye. In an instant it was two o'clock, but they didn't want to leave.
When they were completely full, they lay side by side, comparing clouds drifting across the blue Parisian sky.
"Look, there's one that looks like a cat," said Cat Noir, pointing at a particular blob.
Ladybug laughed. "Shut up, Kitty." She pointed at another blob. "But that one, that looks like a ladybug."
Cat Noir peered at it, then looked back at Ladybug, preparing to tease her more. His breath caught in his throat - she was staring straight at him. Their gazes locked, and they both felt so much for the other in that moment. It wasn't a surprise to Cat, but the rush of emotion shocked Ladybug.
She sat up suddenly. "Cat..."
He sat up too, and without thinking, without breathing, she kissed him.
He was intoxicating. It was awkward at first, but soon they settled into a natural rhythm, their lips dancing like music. It was like a breath of fresh air for the both of them from the stress of their daily lives. It felt so completely right that when they broke away with a start, all they could do was stare at each other.
Then Ladybug got up, avoiding his eyes. "I... I have to go. I can't do this." She walked away, and stood facing away from him. "I'm in love with someone else, Cat."
Then she left, and all Cat Noir could do was stare, his chest heavy from the sensation of coming down from such a burst of euphoria. Happiness was the only way he could describe that kiss. Pure happiness.
But she left. She was gone, and now sadness filled him up inside.
There was someone else, and it wasn't him.
