here's the t: the riverdale canon is pretty much set in stone.
if you were writing a fanfic for fangs, for example, its going to be hard to not include the midge thing/the arrest/etc. you have to figure out how to fit your story into the canon without disturbing it too much.
the canon (unless you're explicitly writing an au) is kind of what makes the story, so make sure you keep it together!
