I always lucid dreamt. I didn't try to, but whenever I fell asleep I would quickly come to realize that I was in a dream and I'd be able to control it, if I wanted to. Sometimes my dreams were interesting enough on their own that I wanted to let them play out on their own and see where it went; and this was one of those dreams. I was sitting on a cloud, the air was warm and a light breeze tickled my skin. I couldn't see the sun, but it was bright. In fact, the light seemed to be coming from right beside me. The mysterious boy I'd met at the party sat next to me in the black outfit, but a bright white light shone around him like an aurora. The light should have been blinding, but it didn't cause me to squint. My blue eyes locked with his green ones and he opened his mouth to say something, but no words came out, just the obnoxious trilling of my alarm. The dream disappeared as my eyes snapped open, the sun shining brightly through the open windows.
I internally cursed myself for forgetting to close the blackout curtains and for agreeing to workout with Susan early on a Saturday morning. I rolled over an spotted Krissy passed out across her bed, still her makeup and outfit from last night, not at all bothered by my alarm. I envied how deep she was able to sleep as I rolled out of bed and pulled on workout clothes.
It was still a bit chilly when I walked outside. Well, chilly for florida. I pulled my zip up closer around me and jumped in my jeep.
I pulled up to Susan's apartment complex and sent her a text letting her know I was outside. While I waited for her to come out, I scrolled through Facebook. Because I couldn't get him off my mind, I typed Harry into the search bar. After scrolling through pages of Harry's I came to the conclusion he wasn't there.I sighed as Susan threw open the door and hopped up.
"No need to get huffy," she said, winding her long brown hair into a bun on the top of her head. "You could have said no to working out with me."
"Not everything is about you." I joked. I pulled out of the the complex's parking lot and headed to the highway. The university had a gym, but of course my best friend wanted to take an early morning yoga class at a local gym. "I met a guy last night."
"Oooh details details! Was he a good kisser?" Susan squealed. I grinned, she was just as boy crazy as I was and, like Krissy, any time I talked about a boy other than Liam, she was thrilled.
"I wouldn't know, we didn't kiss."
She threw me an incredulous look. "Uhm, I saw your Snapchats last night, you looked great. Why exactly did you not get it?"
"I don't know. We got along really great and we had good conversations but he just...dropped me off. He didn't really tell much about himself and when I asked for his number he just said he'd see me again. I don't know, it was weird but I just got this feeling that I knew him or I should know him."
"Mysterious." She wiggled an eyebrow. "Probably playing hard to get or something. I'm sure he got your number from one of his brothers and is just sitting around waiting to text you."
"No, I don't think he's in a frat. Didn't seem like the type. But what if he just wasn't interested?" I recounted the night with her, the things we'd talked about, how he leant me his clothes and taken me out to eat, and then dropped me off, just like that. I finished the story as we walked into the class, setting our mats up in the back of the room and the class began.
"I don't know, it is weird. Maybe he was shy?" she whispered, earning us a glare from the woman in front of us who was trying to focus on her deep breathing.
"I mean, there is a chance he's just not that interested." I whispered back between deep breaths. I wasn't like Krissy-I didn't automatically assume every guy liked me, in Krissy's defense most guys usually did, but I had thought there had been a spark. Enough of something to at least warrant grabbing a cup of coffee or at the very least sharing phone numbers. Maybe I was just so desperate to find someone that wasn't Liam, I mistook a stranger's friendliness for interest.
"I mean what boy would just stand and talk to just one girl for hours at a party though?" she countered.
I nodded in agreement and switched into warrior 2 pose, "That's true."
"Boys are stupid. Especially boys our age. Don't worry about it. He said he was going to see you again so just wait for that to happen and she what happens then." She shrugged and stuck her tongue out at the woman in front of us that now shushed us.
Forget about it until I need to think about it again. I could do that. I turned my attention back to the class and forced my body into poses they shoudn't be going into. 90 minutes later, Susan and I left the class, panting and covered in sweat.
"Let's do arms, we didn't have enough upper body in that class." I suggested, heading towards the weight rack across the gym from the classroom. Susan gave me a shocked look.
"You want to work out MORE?"
I shrugged, "I'm in the mood." She raised an eyebrow but followed me across the sticky gym floor. "So did I tell you what Lily told me in abnormal psych the other day about Jenny?"
"No do tell!"
I started in on the long story as we chose our weights and did light arm workouts. After a few sets and many long pauses to put emphasis on the parts of the story that needed, we decided to finish up and head to breakfast. I walked back to rerack my weights, looking over my shoulder to finish listening to the story I was being told.
I saw Susan's eyes widen in curiosity and turned to follow her gaze. Two huge football players had been lifting overly heavy weights and one of them had thrown one down after his set and it smashed onto the other's foot. The latter looked angrily at his friend and brought him into a headlock, starting a racuos wrestling match, pulling the half fighting half playing boy towards the weight rack. They weren't paying attention to their surroundings and both heavy athletes smashed into the other side of the weight rack from us. The force of the two boys and the unevenness of the weights caused the entire rack to fall forward, directly towards me. Susan jumped backwards but I was stuck in the spot, rooted in shock. I closed my eyes, a stupid decision, but my mind had stopped working. Just when the rack should knocked me off my feet, a large hand wrapped around my forearm and yanked me backward. The resounding crash brought the entire gym to silence. I stared at heavy rack. The lower half of my body should have been buried beneath the heavy weights and racks. The hand that had saved me was still wrapped around my arm. I followed the hand up to the arm, which was sprinkled with tattoos. Harry's emerald eyes were trained on my face, his expression one of concern.
"Are you okay?" he questioned slowly. He locked eyes with mine and I became aware of the buzzing sensation of where his hand laid on my arm. I looked back down at his hand and he dropped it, the sensation falling away with it.
"I'm fine, just...shocked. Where... where did you come from?" I breathed.
Harry stood in front of me wearing a t shirt, grey joggers, and a thick blue headband pushing his brown curly hair back. He answered in his slow, measured voice. "I was working out and saw what happened."
"You don't work out at the gym on campus?" I blurted. It was a stupid question, but I was trying not to think of the fact I had nearly lost my ability to walk.
He gave me a quizzical look, but answered nontheless. "No, I live off campus, around the corner from here, this is just easier."
Susan had just finished telling off the football players for being "testosterone filled idiots" and headed our way. She reached us and slid an arm around my shoulder. "Oh my god, Lanie, why didn't you move? Your legs would have been crushed under that! Thank god for...uhm, who are you." She turned her attention towards Harry.
"Harry." He gave a small crooked smile and my heart pounded harder. I blamed my irregular heartbeat on the adrenaline from the workout. Susan's eyes widened and she locked eyes with me in a silent question. I nodded slightly, trying not to make it obvious that she was recognizing him as someone I'd spoken about, but his eyes stayed locked on my face, and that mischievous look of amusement sparked in his eyes telling me my efforts had been wasted.
"Oh, nice to meet you. I'm Susan. I'm going to run to the bathroom quickly, make sure Lanie doesn't almost break an arm while I'm gone." She turned on her heel and walked away, but not before sending a meaningful look over her shoulder.
"Oh uhm, thank you, for pulling me out of the way." I muttered, aware of the sweat dripping down my neck and the remnants of last night's makeup smudged around my eyes from rubbing them. Harry said he'd been working out but he looked fresh and clean, like he'd been relaxing on the couch.
"You're welcome," he grinned, the mischievous air still lingering around his smile.
"Well, I'll let you get back to your workout." I shuffled awkwardly, brushing the flyaway hairs off my forehead. "See you around?" I tacked on at the end, bringing the sentence up like a question. I wasn't about to ask for his number again but even just being here with him for a few seconds, I felt like I needed to know him. He'd said he'd see me again before, but this couldn't have been what he meant. He wanted to see me again, not covered in sweat and standing like an idiot in front of falling weights...right?
"Yes, you will." he answered, the rascal look back fully now on his face. "Bye, Angel."
And with that, he turned and disappeared into the now crowded gym.
