No place like home

chapter 9

We haven't long left the safety of the camp but I can happily say I'm loving the front seat. There isn't a roof and it's all open and I'm loving the breeze. For an apocalypse it's still warm and sunny in the Sumner and cold and cloudy in the winter. Perfect if you ask me.

The only downside to this. Nobody has said anything yet. I look around at the surprisingly well kept vehicle. It's a nice dark green altered safari Jeep, with strangely comfy seats.

I glance at the air conditioning and stereo briefly wanting it to work but I remove my gaze unwillingly to road ahead.

"Wanna see something cool?" Frost asks glancing at new with a smirk. I nod cautiously and he reaches for the stereo I was looking at and presses a button.

It does nothing and he sits back but I take no notice of his failed attempt to try and trick me and look out the empty window into the fields that remain untouched. Well I guess they're not touched because no walkers could survive on plants and there wasnt anybody this far out.

A small static sound hits my ears but u take bigger notice. All cars I've tried to hijack have done that so it doesn't bother me. But when music actually plays my head snaps toward it and I can't help but show my surprise and happiness.

"It works?" I question happily figuring out the song. He chuckles and smiles widely. "Yeah I kept working on this car until it was all fixed and had no problems and the main thing I worked on was figuring out how to make it work. but sure enough I did" He says proudly.

"You know what else you can do?" He asks and looked back through a small hatch type hole and the wall that blocked me from seeing the others folded to the sides.

I laughed at how crazy this was and the others smiled and joined in. "Go and sit with them for a but if you want" Frost suggests and I nod and he slows enough so that I won't fall over getting to my seat.

But frost is a trickster and hit the gas before I hit the sit and I fell flat on the floor. "I hate you!" I yell with a but of humour.

Dan laughs and holds out his hand for me to take. I take it happily and he helps new onto the seat but I reluctantly let go if his hand.

"So Salem, if you don't mind me asking... How did this all start for you?  Like what we're you doing?  Who were you with? And his did you survive by yourself for two years?" Harry asks tilting his head like a puppy. I awkwardly look at tom and we both sit completely still.

I quickly pull out the memories I tried so hard to forget and get a bit overwhelmed.

Flashback

I woke up on time for once and get dressed as fast as I can so my mum doesn't moan at me.

I skip downstairs and my dad is rushing around packing things for his business trip. My mum is quickly preparing food and my brothers somehow are both ill and are getting the day off.

I skip breakfast and head straight for the door after saying goodbye to everyone and make my way time school.

"Hey guys" I say happily to three of my best friends and they both turned and smiled, "hey" Tom and frost say in sync while Harrison rummages through his bag, "Harrison we have chem" Tom says and he visibly relaxes.

Ring!

The first bell sounds and we all head different directions to class. I walk into my history class slightly late and to my surprise Dan isn't in his seat next to mine... How boring.

I don't pay much attention to the first half of the lesson but when the teacher suddenly screams at us I tune back in.

"BARACADE THE DOOR QUICKLY! THEN GET TO THE FAR SIDE OF THE CLASS!" We all stand and she helps us push and drag desks and shelf units over all the doors.

I cant stay in here get out before all the doors are blocked.

I slip out a back door that hadn't been blocked yet and walked quickly and quietly through the halls.

As I neared the science rooms there was all sorts of shouting and crying. A fire had broken out and was consuming the entire school almost.

I start running time try and find the others but as we all see each other and get closer a beam falls in front of us and blocks the path, "get outside I'll find you guys!" I yell to them over the screams and cries of our peers.

I dash for the fire exit and push open the large metal door. I walk round the building to find the science exit but as I rounded the corner I was wiped of my feet.

I look at who was on top of and never but... They were dead.

I push them back but I didn't do much. I shut my eyes tightly and waited for it to finish me off but it never came and seemed to have got off me.

I open them slowly in fear that it was just waiting but a hand fell in front of me and I took it almost immediately.

"Lachlan?" I say surprised. He was in the upper buildings that caught fire first. How was he here?

"Thank god your safe! Here take this and run. Go home fill a bag and run out of the city. Her as far away as possible!" He shoves a pistol in my hand and points for me to leave.

I don't think his instructions through and I do as he said. But when I reached home nobody was there and blood trailed everywhere.

I was in too much shock to feel anything else that I just grabbed what I could and started running.

All I did from that point on was run.

End of flashback

"It's a long story for another day" I hear both frost and Tom sigh in relief and the drive continued in silence.
