It's been a week, a week since Valkyrie had been outside, a week since she had spoken to anyone, a week since she told skulduggery she loved him.

Valkyrie sat in the corner of her room in Gordon's mansion, silently crying tears that had long since dried up. 'This is it,' she thought, 'I'm finally going to do it.' She sat up slowly shaking slightly she quickly stumbled to her bedside table, pulling out a hidden compartment in the back of the bottom drawer, her hands shook as she pulled out a wooden box that she had hidden in there multiple years ago, back when she had first found out that she was Darquesse.
She ran her fingers over the lid of the box for what could possibly be the last time. She ever-so-carefully placed the compartment door back in the drawer before closing it. She stood up slowly, taking in all the ‪small details of the room, from the band poster she had stuck on the wall when she was still a teenager, to the tiny crack in the floorboards.
She began taking slow steps towards her door, still examining the room it seemed so surreal, yet today was the day so, when she finally reached the door she decided to seal her fate by opening it. She stepped into the hallway reminiscing all the good times she had, had in the mansion... And the bad... She admired the space as she had the day of Gordon's funeral, questioning wether or not she still liked the rugs, or the artwork along the walls.
Before she knew it, she was standing in front of the bathroom door, the tall white-painted piece of wood seemed to loom over her threateningly, she sighed as she opened it, slowly, as to treasure every last second. She walked in slowly shutting the door behind her quietly. She gazed at the room, grazing her fingertips over the smooth tiles on the wall.
She looked at the bathtub, it seemed most convenient for what she was about to do. She slid into it, still wearing all of her clothing. She contemplated filling it with water but quickly dismissed the idea.
She looked down at her hands, just to make sure she was still holding the box. She put a hand behind her neck, before unclipping a chain, she put it next to the box on the bottom of the tub, attached to it was a key, a key that only she knew what it opened.
She picked up the key, chain still attached to it, she grabbed the small , almost unnoticeable lock that held the box shut, she opened it desperately with the key. The lock dinged as it fell alongside the key, hitting the bottom of the tub. Valkyrie gently opened the lid of the box, to be greeted with the sight of all her knives and blades.
She had no idea which one to use first, but then her eyes fell upon a wooden-handled knife, the blade was made of stainless steel, and it was still sharp as the day she had received it. It had been a gift, for her 17th birthday, from skulduggery.
At the bottom where the blade connected with the handle, there was something engraved that she had not noticed before, she looked closer and saw the familiar words "Until the end" she gasped as her mind was flooded with memories, 'maybe I don't need to anymore.' She thought, before remembering the previous week, suddenly she was more determined than ever.
She rolled up her sleeve and put the blade near her wrist, she wasted no time even thinking of changing her mind before she pushed down, the blade easily cutting through her skin, she gritted her teeth, determined not to cry out, as the pain hit, 'I deserve this,' she thought, 'for ever so much as thinking, that maybe, just maybe, Skulduggery would ever be able to love me.'
Then there was a loud shattering sound, as if the window had just been broken, 'probably just some kids playing a game with a ball.' She reasoned, but then there was footsteps to accompany the noise. Valkyrie stiffened before pulling the bath/shower curtain around the tub.
For a few blissful moments the noise stopped, before there was the sound of a door being opened, 'that sounded close...' Valkyrie said, her heart beating faster than normal, she was so transfixed by the possibility that someone had broken in that she didn't notice the blood pooling around the space in the tub where she had lay her hand.
Then, the worst possible scenario happened, her phone rang. 'Shit!' She thought digging through her pockets, 'why the hell isn't the damned thing muted?' She finally touched her phone when the ringing stopped... And the bathroom door opened.
"Valkyrie, I know you're in here." A familiar velvety voice said. "Go away!" She said her voice faltering "No, Valkyrie we need to talk, and I'm not leaving until we do." He urged. "We talked now g-go" she retorted, "Valkyrie? I know something's wrong," "Don't be stupid, I'm f-" he cut her off "Don't lie to me, I've known you since you were twelve, I can tell when you're lying to me!" "I'm not lying!" She yelled, "then come out here and we can have a proper conversation." He said, gently. "No." She stated, " then I'll come in there." He said simply and before she could protest he had shut the door and had begun to pull the curtain away, "s-stop!" She pleaded, turning away, so she was facing the other side of the bath and angled in a way that made it so he would be unable to see her face. He stopped, "Val, please..." She sniffed, "Val, whatever it is, I can help." "I don't want your help!" She snapped, "Val, I'm going to open the curtain, okay?" She sniffed, as he carefully pulled the curtain, she attempted to pull down her sleeves.
He gasped as he saw the blood and the knives, at first he didn't know what to think, but then he seemed to realize what had happened, "Val...why'd you do it?" She turned her head slightly, " because... Because you told me you didn't like me... And-and I didn't see the point of living in a world where to one I love doesn't even like me." By the end of her sentence she was whispering, and Skulduggery looked like he was crying. "Val, you never let me finish my sentence, I was going to say that I don't like you, because I'm completely and utterly in love with you." She snapped her head around, "Y-you- really?" She stammered, he nodded, "yes Valkyrie, really." She stood up suddenly and launched into him, forcing him into a hug, which he quickly returned, "I'm so sorry, Valkyrie, I never meant to hurt you, not once." She smiled into his shoulder. "I- okay." She sniffed, "Val, give me your hand..." She began to pull away, but he grabbed her shoulders, "please, I only want to help..." She looked down as she held her shaking hands out, in front of herself, he gently took her right hand and tugged the sleeve up slightly, his eye sockets were greeted with the sight of many white scars, "V-Val, how long?" He stuttered, for what could possibly be the first time in his life. "I-well... Not since.. Y'know... Back when I was darquesse..." His skull snapped upwards, "What, no, no, I promised that I wouldn't let you get hurt, I failed... Didn't I?" She looked up into his empty eye sockets, "No, Skul, you didn't hurt me, and you certainly did not fail. I did this to myself and there was no way you could've protected me from that." He made a noise that sounded like a sob. "Other hand, please." She pulled her sleeve down and gave him her left hand. He once again tugged the sleeve up, "sorry..." She began, "Val? W-where you going to...?" He cut her off, she nodded and hung her head again. " he grazed his thumb gently over some old scars, "you need to get these checked out, Val, they could get infected-" "No." She stated, "no hospitals, they'll want me to see a phychiatrist, then I'll be put in a loony bin." He pulled her in for another hug. "Okay, no hospitals, but you need to go to someone who can clean them properly." She sighed, "fine- as long as they don't tell me to see a phychiatrist- or ask too many questions." He nodded, "okay, we can manage that."
