If you don't want to hear me ramble a little, feel free to skip this chapter. It's just something that I thought would be cool (and make a better story), so I thought I'd share it and see what you all thought. With that said, I shall resume.
What if Legolas was not romantically attracted to Tauriel? We never see him do anything that is necessarily romantic!
We see Thranduil make assumptions about his son (whom he obviously doesn't have a healthy relationship with). We see Tauriel making choices that are affected by Thranduil's assumptions, but Legolas himself never makes any romantic moves!
Yeah, I know what you're thinking. What about the "he does not control my heart" thing? What about watching her and Kili? What about--
True, true, but bear with me. (Or skip to the next chapter, if you'd rather).
Those things could be interpreted as romantic, but what if Legolas loved Tauriel like a little sister? I know it sounds weird, but can I just state my case?
He says she fought well. Could that be pride in her? Is it beyond the realm of possibility that it was just Thranduil being paranoid of his son growing up and finding a wife?
He watches her and follows her with a very protective air. Could that be a brotherly protectiveness? What if his irritation with Kili wasn't "you're moving in on my girl", but "you're hitting (rather crudely) on my little sister?" (I mean, any girls with older brothers probably get that...)
When she leaves Mirkwood, he follows her, and says that she knew he would come. Could that be that he was a devoted friend, rather than a lover? When he says Thranduil does not control his heart, that could be simply that he is choosing his love for Tauriel over his love (which is obviously non-romantic) for Thranduil.
Alright, enough rambling. I just think it would've made a better story, had Legolas been a brotherly friend, rather than a lover.
Thank you for bearing with me, Mellonae.
What are your thoughts on the idea?
