Half an hour later, I found myself sat in a corner table at the local coffee shop, sipping at a frappuccino and staring at Troye.
The drive over there in Troye’s car had been awkward and devoid of conversation topics, but now that we were here, Troye seemed ready to speak.
“Ember, I am so sorry. I can’t believe Jack would do that to Tyler-” He started rambling, before I cut him off.
“What can’t you believe about that? Face it, Troye. You are best friends with a jerk who has no filter between his thoughts and his actions. Sugarcoating this isn’t going to help anything.” I felt a little harsh, but it really needed to be said.
He looked a little bit shocked, as if my words had stung him, but continued speaking. “That’s the thing, Ember. I don’t want to be friends with them anymore! Before, I was just desperate and lonely and that weird kid from Australia and then when I started pretending to be a whole other person with Jack and the others, I seemed cool. I wanted to be cool! In a town like this, value is based on association!” His voice cracked. “I- I’m done with Jack. I no longer want to be his friend, and I don’t care about popularity anymore. I want what your group has.” Before I could interject and say that they weren’t exclusively ‘my group’, he just kept pushing. “I want to be close friends with someone. I want a real best friend, someone who knows and likes me for me. Please, help me get out of this Ember.”
He had been staring down emptily towards his coffee cup during his rant, but he looked up at me then, glancing through his eyelashes. His big blue eyes were filled with desperation, and some other emotion I couldn’t yet put a name to.
I sighed. “Fine.”
