Friends... Or more?

Chapter 21

The grass is tall and brushes at my thighs. I sit down and flop myself on my back. I look up at the sky and decide that today is the most perfect day that I've seen in awhile. My cloak is splayed out beneath me and protects me from the harsh texture of it. I open my eyes and look up to see a bright blue sky, with enough clouds to protect me from the sun. It's comfortably cool outside, I close my eyes again and feel the beginning of sleep taking over.
"Oi, brat!" I hear an annoyed voice call out to me. I sit up ramrod straight and look back, only to go flying in the opposite direction. I groan in pain and stand up shakily. Levi is standing with his hand on his hip and is glaring at me. I stand up straight and salute him.
"Yes corporal!" I respond and his only reaction is a lessening of his glare and a sigh. He crosses his arms and looks up at the sky with an almost calm expression in his face.
"It's a nice day... Isn't it" he says and sits down in the grass. My eyes widen and I nod at him slowly. He looks at me expectantly and lays the ground next to him. I hurry over to him and sit next to him. We both lay down and I look over in time to see him with a peaceful expression and relaxed muscles. My eyes widen and I feel my heart skip a beat. His hard expression returns in an instant and he opens his eyes. I know his moment of relaxation is over and I feel a pang of guilt for that.
"I'll kill them all sir... I promise I will make it so you can normally" I promise him and even though he scoffs I know he has hope for it. He sits up and runs a hand messily through his hair. He looks at me and through his glare I can see a rich sadness.
"Don't make promises you can't keep Eren..." Levi says in a quiet voice before getting up and walking off back to the base. I feel my determination swelling inside me like a fire and I clench my fist. I'll kill them, I swear it.

Levi and I are soaked in blood. I'm breathing hard and I can barely stand since I just came out of my titan form. Levi stands up and looks up at the sky with the same almost calm expression that he had on that day. "We did it. We killed them all..." I said with wide eyes. He sigh and looks over at me sadly.
"No, they aren't. They won't be for a while hopefully" Levi says before he starts walking back to the base.
"Wha-! What do you mean" I called to him and started running up to him. He turns around and gives me a firm look that tells me to stay were I am.
"You're a titan shifted Eren, ad you're still alive. I want you to live a long life, you did good. I just wish I would be able to see a titan free world before I die..." Levi states before resuming walking back. I feel like the information had punched me in the gut and Im frozen in place. I get an idea and even though it makes my hands shake i know I have to follow through. I promised him. I sprint back to the base and take a quick shower before grabbing a piece of paper, a pen, and a long strip of rope. I set the piece if paper down on a nearby desk and write my note with shaky hands. I tie the rope up to make a noose. I place the chair under it and stand up on it carefully. I stick my head through it and I can feel the scratchy fabric on my neck. I shiver and try to control my harsh breathing." This is what has to be done" I say to myself and in one swift motion, kick out the chair from under me. A strangled shout is ripped from me and my eyes fog over in the struggle. My mind starts getting fuzzy and I can feel myself starting to go numb even though I'm still thrashing around.
"Oi, quit making so much- EREN!!" Levi shouts and runs down the hallway towards me. I see the darkness and I give into the pull I feel. My limbs go slack and the last thing I hear is the scrape if a chair, a gasp, and a pained sob. "Eren!! Eren!!"
"Eren!!" My eyes fly open and I see Levi above me with a frightened expression on his face. The covers rustle when I sit up and I am shocked when I feel hot tears slide down my face. I wipe them away hurriedly so I won't worry Levi but that is to no avail because he is fussing over me anyway. "What did you dream about?" Levi asks me and I cover my face with my hands.
"We were in this different world with these... Horrifying creatures... We killed them all but I was somehow able to turn into one of them, so to fulfill some promise I made to you... I killed myself" I explained breathlessly. Levi stared at me with wide eyes and I looked over at him confused.
"I had a dream like that too, except I wasn't killing myself. I saw you vomit suicide" Levi explained and my eyes widened as well. I looked down at the bed sheets and told him it must be some movie we had watched and he also wrote it off hesitantly. We went back to sleep and didn't have that dream ever again.
