Chapter 6
January 31st
Nicole couldn't believe how fast Sunday night had arrived. School holidays would officially be finished tomorrow and she would be in year eleven. The thought made Nicole cringe with nerves because it was so scary.
Nicole remembered how scared she was when she went into year ten last year. It was made even worse when she found out that she was going to be starting at a new school.
At the time, Nicole didn't think that she would be able to make good friends like she did. She didn't even think that Tasha would be nice enough to befriend her. Nicole thought that she would have been alone for the good first half of the year but she was wrong; she met Tasha.
But all of that was nothing compared to what she was feeling now. Yes, she had her friends, but this was year eleven. Nicole was nearly going to be going into year twelve. She was nearly head of the school and that was so scary. Now was the time to start thinking of her future and Nicole had no idea where she was going to start with that.
Nicole had no idea of what her future held for her.
Obviously, Nicole decided, any career she chose would have had to be with horses and surely there would be heaps of horse careers for her to choose from. Nicole had always had thought about following in her father's footsteps; be a race horse trainer. But then training race horses wasn't really her cup of tea, after a little bit of thought.
Then Nicole thought about being a vet.
And equine vet.
Nicole smiled at that. She could see herself saving a horse from a life or death illness and she would be able to see the horse fit and well again. An equine vet was definitely a possibility, Nicole decided.
Lastly, Nicole thought about being a horse breeder, but then, she couldn't see herself buying a beautiful stallion and mare just to pass on their genes to a foal and sell it for money. That wasn't right, Nicole decided.
Then Nicole thought about the other evening she spent with her father and the race horse horses. They were all so beautiful and Nicole loved giving them the attention that they deserved. Nicole's thoughts kept returning to the grey mare at the racing stables. Nicole wanted to see her again.
The poor mare looked sick, but her father said it wasn't her place to get involved.
The poor mare had many hoof cracks and Nicole thought it wasn't good for her. The horse also looked like she had an illness called epistaxis.
Yes.
Nicole did her research.
Nicole knew about horses and their illnesses.
Maybe this was telling her that she should have become an equine vet.
Anyway, Nicole knew what epistaxis was and she hated seeing horses suffering from it. The illness caused blood to appear at the horse's nostrils, like a nosebleed in a person. Nicole had begged her father to let her do something but he wouldn't let her. He did, however, promise that he would talk to the owner of the horse about it and that made her feel somewhat better.
Nicole then eventually looked at the time and she decided that it was getting late. She decided that now was the time to get changed into her pyjamas, say good night to her father, and then go to bed. She needed to get a good sleep before school the next day, despite her nervousness. She was really going to have to try and not let her nerves stop her from getting a good sleep.
So, when Nicole was finally ready for bed, she went down the stairs to say good night to her father. That didn't take long and when it was done, she went back up to bed, telling herself that she really needed to get a good night sleep.
