In the Kingdom of Dryal.....

"Phew, that was the last one, " said a boy, hauling a log onto a truck. He wiped the sweat off his forehead and sat down on a nearby tree stump. He took his canteen and took a long drink from it.

"Nice job today Matthew, " another boy said. "It only took us 30 minutes! More break time!" Matthew grinned but his grin faded when his mind caught on something.

"What's up?" The other boy said, noticing the change. "Is there something on your mind?" "Umm, yeah," answered Matthew, "The choosing day is tomorrow Jordan, and I haven't chosen what I want to do!" Matthew exclaimed.

"Oh, don't worry about that, the Baron chooses everyone's jobs. I mean, he knows what you would be good at and stuff....." Jordan's voice got quieter. "But unless you don't have any talents, you'll be fine."

Matthew was shocked and relieved at the same time. Well, that was one worry that had been taken off. He was still worried, but at least he wouldn't need to worry about what job he should do. But one though was nagging at the back of his mind. What if he didn't have any special talents? What if he wasn't chosen at all? What if he was exiled from the Kingdom of Dryal? He would have to spend his whole life farming or even worse, scooping poop of horses. He shook his head and told himself it would be fine.

"....really want to be a knight," Jordan was  saying. Matthew realized he had dozed of and listened to his friend's words again. "They get to wear shiny armor and get's a free horse. They can use real swords too! I hope I get chosen as a knight....." Matthew knew Jordan was very good at sword-fighting. They occasionally fought with wood bats, but he beat Matthew every time.

"You'll get picked as a knight for sure. You beat me every time in sword-fighting right?" Matthew reminded Jordan, hoping he was reassuring his friend. For some reason, it seemed to make Jordan more nervous. Matthew thought that it would be embarrassing to be complimented but then didn't get the job.

Jordan sighed. "I hope I do. Well, you have nothing to hope for because you don't have anything you want to be so you're lucky." Jordan's words stung a little, but he forgave him and chuckled quietly. "Yeah" Matthew wondered if he would be chosen at all. He was very curious about his future. When he was little, he always dreamed of being a knight. Now....not so much. All he could do now was get some rest, sleep, and make himself formal for the Choosing.
