Chapter 3

We had been driving for about and hour on the highway when I noticed the tall buildings of the city beyond us.

"Wait, are we in Boston?" I asked from the passenger seat. Lucas was absorbed by his iPod and Adam was listening to music.

"You guessed it. Mom wanted to go to her favorite restaurant, Olli's tonight. She said she had a busy day and wanted to treat herself. She also wanted us to be there," dad said.

My heart sunk a little.

I was hoping there would be exciting news of some sort.

That was one of my bad habits. I always got my hopes up, even when I knew in my brain that it wouldn't happen. As much as I try not to hope, I always do.

I stared out the window at the buildings. We lived in such a small, wooded town, on the rare occasion we visited a city, it was so interesting.

I remember the last time we went to Olli's, it was for mom's birthday, we don't usually drive all the way out to Boston just for dinner. That was a special occasion, so what could this be?

Mom probably got a raise or something! That had to be it! Why else would we be going to an expensive restaurant after mom had a "long day" for a special occasion?

That thought put me at ease, and I say back in the passenger seat and enjoyed the skyline.

We had to park in a parking garage, and walked up to Olli's.

It looked the same as it always had. Tiny, like most businesses in the city, but cute. It was a bit upscale, which was why we needed to dress up a bit, but other than that it was relaxed.

We walked inside and I noticed all the candles on each of the square, black, marble tables. There was jazz music playing softly in the background, but it was hard to hear over the people talking and laughing. All the waiters and waitresses wore white button up shirts with the sleeves rolled up, with thin black ties under a black apron.

My mom waved to us from 2 tables that had been pushed together in the corner with 5 chairs.

"I hope you haven't been waiting long," My dad said as he took off his jacket ad put it on his chair.

"Oh it wasn't that long, gave me long enough to relax and sip on my drink," my mom said, holding her wine glass in the air. "Hi Annalise! How was your day?"

"Good," I said like I said every day when my mom or dad asked me how my day went. It was better not to go into detail about Liliana or anything that happened today.

"That's great? How was school, Lucas and Adam?" She said to my younger brothers.

Lucas, who was in 6th grade, went on about his day in Language Arts, and how he got to read for the class. Adam, who's in 7th, talked about how this kid was being annoying in class.

Soon they would know how to respond to the question.

A waitress came over to our table, and we ordered drinks. I got a sprite, which is what I always got when we ate out.

-

By the time we all finished eating, my mom spoke up.

"I almost forgot, I have big news!" My mom said.

My heart skipped a beat and I stiffened, not knowing what to expect.

"You aren't having another baby are you?" Adam said. We always knew what each other was thinking somehow.

My mom laughed, like it was a joke. "No, there isn't going to be another baby in this family. Ever."

"Then what is it?" Lucas asked excitedly.
