Chapter 6
There was only one week until my audition, and the nerves and excitement were setting in.
Everything was set- my outfit, song, transportation, and venue location, ect.
I had made plans to meet with Hailey over coffee the weekend before the audition- exactly a week before the big day.
I walked into Starbucks to see her at a table with a giant glowing smile. Her short, dark hair was left straight, and she wore leggings and a sweatshirt.
I waved back at her and went to go sit with her. We ordered our coffee and sat back down.
"So how has school been for you," she asked me, taking a sip of her coffee.
I shrugged. "I don't know. I had this friend but she ditched me for somebody better. We're still friends, and we talk often, but it's just not how things used to be between us. We used to be so close," I stared into the brown coffee.
"I can't relate to that too much, I was home schooled, and I had a few neighbors as friends, but I left them behind when I went off to my dad. They went to public school and had their own friends, and I was always left out," Hailey said.
"I always think I have it bad, but then I see people like you who have went through so much of their own shit and can still manage to look at it in a positive way," I said.
"Melanie Martin," Hailey began, calling me by my newly given stage name, "you can do the same too. Forget about anybody who's hurt you and move on with your life. They don't deserve you."
"I see them everyday, I can't just stop going to school just because I'm trying to weed her from my life," I added.
"Yeah, well, you are trying out for The X Factor, maybe you won't have to go back to school after this year," Hailey said.
"I need to finish my senior year somehow."
"Easy. I've been doing online school since I left my mother, and since my dad isn't able to home school. I'll have completed all of my work in a few weeks and will be a high school graduate," Hailey said.
"That sounds like a great idea. I'll talk to my mom about it. You know, if I even make it far in the competition."
And after that we discussed our experiences with singing and boys and everything in between, and even though I just met her a couple weeks ago, it felt like I knew her forever.
We couldn't have been in the coffee shop for more than an hour and a half, and then I had to go.
We set everything up: since we had to be at the venue at 7am, I decided that my mom and I would pick up Hailey at 4am, which seemed way too early, but we needed some time for parking and any other surprises. I would hate to be late to my first audition.
After that, we hugged, and parted ways. I realized that the next time I would see her would be when we were both taking our first steps to make our dreams come true.

My alarm beeped at 2:30am. I barely slept at all. I was anxiety with legs. My heart began to beat at record speed and I smiled into my pillow with joy.
Then, I turned my alarm off and threw my blankets off of me. It was time to get started because I had a big day ahead of me.
I washed my face and curled my dark hair. I decided that if there was a day when I should wear a lot of make up, today would be the day. I used deep black eyeliner and light sparkly eye shadow. I curled my eyelashes and drenched them in mascara. I picked my favorite pink lip gloss that matched my pants and my headband. When I put my black sparkly crop top on, I felt sexy and unstoppable.
It felt weird, getting totally dressed up at 3 in the morning, when the sky was still pitch black. However, blasting my Salute CD, I didn't have a care in the world.
I dug out my tallest pair of sleek black strappy high heels, and my confidence level bursted. I couldn't believe that the reflection in the mirror was me. I snapped a few mirror pictures so I could remember this moment weeks from now. Just looking at the size of my smile in the picture, I radiated happiness.
It was half past three, and I could hear that my mom was almost done getting ready. Most days, I would reach for a coffee, but today I didn't want to wreck my voice, and the excitement I felt was enough to wake me up.
My brother and dad were still sleeping, so I went down to the basement to belt my special version of Black Widow, and my other songs in case I would need a back up. And by the time I was done with that, it was time to go.
I put Hailey's address in my maps app and my mom and I left for her house. I checked to make sure I had my passport, confirmation letter, and my lip gloss, and it was in my clutch.
"You look like a star, Annie," my mom said from the passenger seat.
"Thanks," I replied, satisfied that she liked it.
"I just want you to know, that regardless of what happens today, your father and I are extremely proud of you," she continued.
"I know," I smiled. My mom rubbed my arm that was on the wheel.
"Promise me that you won't let yourself get beat up through this experience. I want you to succeed, and I know you will if you're determined, but it's a TV show, and even if you're the best singer in the competition, they might eliminate you."
I was quiet, staring into the road. I didn't know what to say to that, because I knew I was throwing myself at something that may break my heart, but I also knew that if I lived my life just hoping for something to happen, and never chasing my dreams, that I would never make something of myself. I would never be living to my full potential.
I wasn't afraid of getting hurt. I know I have a good head on my shoulders and that I will learn from everything that ends up happening, but I just don't think that I can promise that I wouldn't get hurt. If I got sent home, I would be devastated. Of course I would be hurt. But what I can promise is that I will learn from it.
"I'm going to be smart, mom," I decided to say. And that was 100% true.
We arrived at Hailey's house and pulled up front. She lived in a three family home, it appeared. It was hard to tell in the dark. The door opened and I saw Hailey and a man hugging. The man patted her on the back and then sent her off. The man had to be her dad.
I had just realized that I had never seen any of her family members before, and it warmed my heart to see her dad, who was struggling so much, showing her so much support.
I got out of the car to open the door for Hailey, but she stopped me and welcomed me with a big hug.
Hailey walked toward me and she looked like a superstar. Her hair was right above her shoulders, and she wore a short, tight, bright pink dress with lace tights and black ankle boots with tall heels. the tight dress would look slutty on most girls, but Hailey made it look great. Sophisticated, even. She had dark eye makeup that brought out the green in her eyes, and her skin was smooth and even.
Just as I was about to compliment her, she began to speak.
"Are you excited?" Hailey asked, sliding into the car.
"I'm feeling so many emotions right now, I can't tell right now. I'll let you know in a few hours," I laughed to myself. I closed her car door for her, and got back behind the wheel.
"X Factor, here we come, " I said, and we hit the highway.
