Chapter 4

It was 3 weeks after my parents announced their decision to let me audition and my mom and I had sent in all the paper work and got a confirmation for my audition and that, on behalf of the X Factor crew, they were very excited to have me audition.

 Bullshit.

I had a feeling that the entire thing was going to be annoying and that the contestants would be manipulated into thinking they were in the competition solely to become a superstar- but the creator of the show and the producer had a different idea.

My first audition was scheduled to be April 2nd, with callbacks the following week on April 9th. Not that I should be worrying too much about callbacks if I hadn't even passed the first audition yet. But I had a good feeling about this.

I showed up to voice lessons at my high school at 6:30pm like I did every Thursday.

"Hi Miss H!" I said as I entered her "classroom". The room couldn't be larger than 9x9, and I stood in front of the piano.

"There is my future star! How are you? Are you getting excited? Nervous?" Miss H said from behind the piano.

"Anxious is more like it. So the instructions were to pick 3 songs- only a verse and a chorus- so we should pick songs that showcase my range and vocal control in that short amount of time. What have we worked on this year so far that you think would be good?" I asked.

"You know how much I love Beautiful by Christina. It's loud, so if you perform at the same time as other people, then you're sure to be heard. It takes a lot of vocal control, but it doesn't show that much range until the end, which is useless, because you only have a short time to sing," Miss H said. "Oh! You could sing Wings by Little Mix," my face lit up at that, "Or How Ya Doin', or 'See Me Now!'"

"I think I should sing How Ya Doin' or Turn Your Face as my first or second choice, and then In Case by Demi Lovato or Beautiful by Christina for my third choice. It might be good to have 4 songs prepared just in case I change my mind on a song. I did some research and found that the first audition is a Capella, so I shouldn't have a problem changing songs," I discussed.

Everything seemed so real now that I was picking and practicing the songs that could make my dreams come true.

At that lesson I practiced every song with Miss H listening and honestly judging me and showing me how to improve.

I sang every song a million times, and she even let me pull out my phone and listen to the recordings of the song and the techniques that the singer used.

What I did know was to show the emotion of the singer and to feel the words that you are singing.

Weather it's a song about sadness, insecurities, or confidence, you need to be believable and raw about what you're singing.

Also, sing on-key and don't make the judges want to kill their selves.

"I don't know, they just don't feel like magic," I said. I pictured watching myself on The X Factor, and if I would remember myself throughout the competition by that audition. I still had my outfit to pick out, but I knew I would make it memorable.

"I know what you mean. I want to say that you should pick a loud song that will make you memorable and different from everybody else, but I just can't think of one. For next week's lesson, I say keep practicing these songs, but if you think of a better song, call me right away and I will listen to it. Sound good?"

"Great," I said.

"Have you thought about dancing or what your look is going to be?" Miss H said.
