I watched the kids play as I sat on a bench next to the lake. I always wanted a little brother or sister to play with. There was also a boy that looked to be around my age playing with them. He picked them up and tossed them around with ease while they laughed and laughed. I assumed he was their older brother.
"Janelle," I heard my grandma yell and turned my head to see her sticking her small little head out the window of her kitchen. "The food is ready, mija." I got up and grabbed my journal, I had no success in writing today. I usually don't but I always make time to try.
"What did you make, Abuela?" I asked her. She smiled and handed me a plate full of Puerto Rican food piled up into a tall mountain. There was no way anyone could eat this much but of course I didn't complain and sat down to eat my favorite meal. Arroz con abichuelas y bistec, rice with beans and beef steak.
"What have you been up to?" She asked me as she started washing the dishes.
"Nothing, just hanging out by the lake." I said glumly. All of my childhood friends from when I used to come here have moved away or drifted away from me. It was rather boring. I usually slept in until twelve, ate lunch, went out to the lake for a little bit and just sit there until my grandma calls for dinner. Sometimes i'll help her around the house but she is the type to do things on her own.
Occasionally I would sit and talk with my Abuelo but he suffers from Alzheimer's so he doesn't respond, just holds my hand.
"Do you want me to finish, Abuela? You look tired?"
"No, no, bebe, I can handle this." She laughed and then out of nowhere a baseball came flying through our window and landed straight in my hand. I'm not sure how because I can't even pick something up without it falling. "Who did that?" My grandma yelled and stormed out the screen door next to the dining room table.
"Mira, hombre! You're going to fix this window tonight! Do you understand?" I heard her scold the person and when I walked outside it was the same boy I had seen earlier playing with his siblings.
"Yes, Mrs. Garcia. I promise i'll have this fixed by tomorrow morning. I'm so sorry, my younger brother wanted me to teach him how to play and he has a great arm, just horrible aim." I held the ball out and he smiled while he took it.
"Obviously." She started to walk away, "Si el no me arregla esto ahora me va dal algo..." She ranted as she walked back into the house.
"Sorry," He shook his head.
"My fault, are you her...?"
"Granddaughter." I said then added, "Janelle." With a smile.
"I'm Ashton." he extended his hand. "Well, I better get going to find a window for your grandma before she digs my grave." He joked and walked back to his brother and sister, ushering them to a green pick up and driving off.
"Mm..." I turned around and headed back inside.
