CHAPTER ONE

"So, seven?" Jacob asked.

"Yes, I'll be there. I promise," I answered back.

"Don't forget this time, Maddy. I love you."

"I won't! I swear! And I love you, too," I pressed the little red 'END' button.

Jacob was sweet, but he could also be VERY contradicting, sometimes.

I pulled a Sharpie out of the little drawer by the fridge.

"Who was that?" my mom peeked into the kitchen.

"Jacob," I replied, taking the Sharpie and writing 'DINNER @ FAZIO'S @ 7 2NITE!!!' on my palm.

"Oh, good! You know, I just love that boy! Speaking of Jacob, look at this dress I found for you!" she showed me a thick magazine, a picture of a bridal dress on the opened page.

"Mom," I pushed the magazine away, "I'm eighteen."

"Eighteen is an adult, sweetie! You're on your senior year! And when you graduate, you can get married! You know...when he asks!"

I didn't WANT to play princess, thankyouverymuch.

"And stop writing on yourself," she left the room and I rolled my eyes.

-----

I jumped out of the shower, drying my hair with one towel, another one wrapped around myself.

I put on a pair of shorts and a tank top.

Not wanting to bother with my blond, bob-styled hair, I let it go natural--wavy.

I pinned my bangs back with a bobby pin and brushed my teeth.

When I was done, I walked back into my room and picked up my book--Romeo and Juliet--and sat on my beanbag chair.

As I read--and as Romeo prepared to kill himself--I caught a glimpse of black smeared and faded on my palm.

I put my book down and looked at it, trying to remember what I had written.

"DI##€£ @ £AZ¡•'$ @ 7 2#¡T€!!!"

I tried to think back, to decipher what I had written.

My eyes wandered to the clock and memories flooded back.

I jumped straight up, grabbing my purse and cellphone and flip flops and I ran out the door to my car.

No where near dressed to go to Fazio's, since it was a fancy restaurant.

But oh, well.

I had fifteen minutes till seven.

I rummaged around for my keys, and dumped my purse out, only to look up and see they were still in the ignition.

Of. Course.

I shoveled everything back into my purse and sped off to Fazio's to meet Jacob.

Only ten minutes to get there.
