CHAPTER TWO

I slammed the door shut and ran inside.

I located Jacob and sat down across from him, breathless.

"You forgot, didn't you?" he said, looking me up and down, noticing my outfit.

"Yes. No. Maybe," I sighed, "yeah. I'm sorry. I was reading."

"It's fine," he smiled, "I'll have to get use to it," He held my hand across the table.

Jacob had come from money--lots of it. And it showed.

So why he had taken an interest in me back when we were freshman, I wish I knew.

Food came and was set in front of us, "I ordered the usual," he added. He always did.

Then he stood up, "I can't wait," he pulled a small red velvety box out from under the table.

"Uhm..." I pushed back from the table and knocked a waitress over. I stood up and took the table cloth with me, pulling the flower center piece and our food off, too.

My hands flew to my mouth and I stepped back, running into the table behind me.

People stared.

My hands shook and I looked down at them.

They were pulsing with a white light.

The white light radiated and encircled me in a bubble that was bluish.

People started to scream.

"Maddy?" Jacob rushed over to me and reached out and touched the bubble-like thing.

The bubble pushed him backwards into the arms of a waiter.

I balled my hands into fists and the bubble disappeared.

I fled out the door and kept running, and didn't even stop to take a breath.

I ran down an alley and someone swooped down from an apartment ledge and lifted my feet off the ground.

I let out several screams until a hand clamped over my mouth.

Soon, we were high above the ground and far away from Brooklyn.

A girl was holding me like a mother would a baby, and her reddish hair blew back in the wind as huge white wings beat the air.

I looked down.

Usually, heights didn't scare me. But now, I was terrified.

Below us, was a large building, surrounded by trees, in the middle of nowhere.

As we lowered down towards the building, I bit the girls hand so hard I thought I tasted blood and I let out another scream.
