Chapter Two

Monday
The rest of the day progressed as rather uninteresting. After the morning I had, nothing really could have topped that. Speaking of which, I barely got a glimpse of Chris since he spoke to me this morning. My mind kept circling back to what he said over and over again. Him implying the possibility that he might have actually liked it changed everything. All those years desperately infatuated with him and now I finally get something, regardless of everything, gave me hope.

"-re you even listening to what I'm saying?" Jo looked at me annoyed. Her perfectly arched eyebrow raised at me and her arms crossed over her chest as she pouted my way.

"I am!" I sounded almost defensive. There was already so much going in my mind that I could barely process any new information - but I couldn't let her sense something was up because if she caught even a hint of something, she would pressure me into caving. I couldn't trust my mouth around her right now. Jo could be really blunt sometimes, and that's putting it lightly. The only filter she has is on Instagram.

She looked at me like she didn't believe me but thankfully she let it slide. For now, at least. Probably because she was too busy ranting to me about some guy she met.

Jo was the type of girl who didn't do relationships. She had a three date rule - after the third date she would toss the guy out of her life like an old pair of shoes.

Which is why, her talking about a guy for once, which she never has before, was pleasantly surprising. She still hasn't told us who he is, or if he even goes to Riverside High. It's not unlike her to be secretive or discreet about some parts of her life, so we don't make a big deal out if it. We've grown used to her unpredictability.

"Can you believe he's texting me again?" She rolled her eyes at the screen, but despite herself she couldn't help the slight twitch of her lips. I smiled at her secretly when she wasn't looking. It was nice to see her this way; to be excited about something, or someone.

Her fingers moved at lightening speed as they hit the phone screen.

We approach an empty table and sit down across from each other. Jo and I shared a free period together around this time almost everyday.

The sound of the bell reverberated through the hallway and acted as a reminder that class had begun. It was shrill and loud and the worst thing about high school, which is of course because none of my high school experiences were especially traumatising.

It reminded me of class and I got up from my seat and strapped my bag pack over my right shoulder, letting it hang from the other.

I would be lying if I said if I didn't cared about history now more than ever did before.

"I have to get to class Jo, I'll see you later! bye!"

I didn't even wait for her to respond as I raced out of the corridor, slightly guilty that I didn't hear the rest of her story but something told me she'd make me go through the end of it.
