Chapter Four
Wednesday
Mr.Wentworth assigned us with a homework that I was supposed to guide Chris with. He asked me if he could come over but knowing that George, my grouchy, light headed step father would be home, emptying bottles of cheap alcohol - I was reluctant to invite him. After all, I wanted Chris to stick around, didn't I? Leave it to George to make anyone uncomfortable or at least, slightly offended. So, naturally, I asked him if we could just go over to his house instead.
After school I stood in the parking lot where he asked me to be and waited for him to come pick me up.
I recognised some Seniors lounging nearby, sitting inside a pick-up truck and every so often, snickering in my direction. I tucked my hair behind my ear nervously. Young people always made me a bit too conscious.
"Oi, you alone out here?" "Why don't you come on over and have a light with us."
One ginger haired guy asked me.
I knew who he was, tattoo exposed on his bare shoulder, the signature basketball vest and the serpent chain wrapped around his neck; he was one of the notorious bad boys of our school. Yet, for a bad boy he was pretty average looking.
When I took too long to respond, the the girl next to him decided to put in her two cents.
"You're going to scare her away, Matty. Look at her, she's probably never seem one in her life." The girl with pale blonde hair, almost like snow said to him, playing along. He made a dramatic head turn. "Is that true? Am I scaring you, Junior?" He purred at me and I shivered involuntarily.
He looked at me, expecting me to reply just so he could mess with me. I wanted to talk back to him but I knew better than to do that. So instead, I chose to look away and ignore him.
Apparently though, he didn't quite understand it. "Come on girl, Cat's got your tongue?"
The blonde haired girl snickered in response and I felt warmth rising up to my cheeks. It's okay, just ignore them. After several failed attempts at probing, another voice came in.
"Don't be an asshole, Matt. Leave the kid alone."
A guy, probably another Senior, most likely with only one half of Matty's built stated, coolly. He was, for the most of the time silently watching the whole thing play out, until now.
"Fuck off."
"This is my truck, you can get out."
This caused Matt to get even more pissed off and soon he was talking loudly, filling up the empty lot with his whining.
I was relieved with the attention now diverted from me, as Matt began to bark away at the other guy for always 'spoiling his fun'. Yet, I still wished to fade into the background or at least, hide inside the school building. Just then, as if my prayers had been answered, I saw a jet black Chev come into view. I waited in anticipation for as it came closer and closer until it was parked right next to me. I wasted no time to hop inside, grateful for my knight in the shinning vehicle.
