--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When I opened my eyes the scene hadn't changed, other than it being so dark I couldn't see anything but silhouettes. It was probably around the middle of the night. I slowly sat up, my body aching and freezing cold. I glanced down at the figure that was my mother, it was stiff and cold. I pulled a blanket over her body and moved away to find a candle. Once there was light I remembered the last thing my mother had said and I reached for the box, scared to open it.
It must have been important, looking at the box I noticed it was wrapped in cloth making sure it was never opened. I wearily removed the cloth with shaky hands and opened the little box. The first thing I spotted was a neat little letter with my name written in my mother's pretty handwriting. Unlike other poor citizens my mother had known how to read and write and she taught me well.
I grabbed at the letter hungrily tearing it open as fast I possibly could, and inside was a note, from my mother. I read it slowly, scared to miss anything and my eyes widened at the contents of it.
"Ayakou,
If you are reading this it means that I am gone and I have neglected to tell you something of great importance. I do not expect you to forgive me but you have the right to know of your birth. Ayakou Ren, it is your real full name, and not only do you share the royal family name but their blood as well. You, Ayakou, are the illegitimate child of Koutoku and Gyokuen Ren. Because you were born at such a time you were kept a secret; not even your father, Koutoku, knew. Gyokuen sent you away with a servant in hopes of keeping your existence a secret. That servant was me, and I have raised you since that day in hopes of someday bringing you back to the royal family. I apologize for never telling you, I simply did not have the heart to say it. It is now up to you to choose what you do with your life and I will be watching all the way through. Good luck my dear, Ayakou Ren"
I stared at the note, completely flabbergasted. I couldn't believe what i had just read, this had to be some kind of sick joke. I glanced back at the box and saw a black silk scarf inside, along with an eyepatch. The scarf was soft and the eyepatch was a nice change considering I normally covered my right eye with cloth. I still couldn't believe the idea that I could be of royal blood. I looked back over my shoulder at my mother's body.
Only one way to find out, im going to the palace. With that I covered my eye with the patch and wrapped the scarf around my neck. As I left I set the little shack on fire, I had nothing else to take with me and there was no money. I had nothing left to go from other than the note. I could take care of myself right? I'm pretty good with a knife and I can keep out of sight well.
The fire blazed into the night. My eyes watering, I took one last look at my home before I turned my back on it forever.
