I closed my eyes as the room emptied, there was a light chuckle and someone whispered as they passed me, "I wonder what you have against the Empress to get her so worked up~" I recognized the magi's smooth voice and he sounded quite amused.
The door slid shut with a bang behind me, it was then that I risked looking up again. The Empress was watching me like a hawk, and it unsettled me.
"Remove the patch over your eye." Her voice was harsh. She probably already knew about my eye, even still, I jumped a little in surprise, I prefered not to show her. Her gaze hardened when I didn't move, apparently I wasnt given a choice. I slowly reached up and slid the thing off, opening my eye to reveal the blood-red iris. I instantly noticed there were billions of the little bird looking things fluttering around the room, except they were black, not gold. She flinched and looked away, the Empress of the Kou Empire, my own mother, wouldn't even look at me.
"Why are you here? What do you want?" Her blue eyes were aimed towards the wall to her left. I put the eyepatch back on, letting my bangs cover my face as i looked down..
"I- the servant you sent me away with, she- um, she passed away several days ago. She left me a note that told me everything- everything about my real heritage that is." I hesitated and glanced up, she was looking at me now, " I decided to come here to see if she was right, since I have nowhere else to go."
The Empress turned her head back to me, but only stared, she seemed to be thinking. Then, "She was telling the truth, I am your real mother, I would recognize you anywhere. And yes it is true your father was Koutoku Ren although he knew nothing of your existence. That would make you royalty but I do not trust you, a mere rat from the streets. Still I can not deny the fact that you are my daughter and i can not control whether you tell anyone of my mistake;" she was talking about having me, " you will stay in the palace, and you will be supervised at all times. You will not be a servant nor will you be treated as royalty. You will shadow your supervisor throughout the day." She hesitated making sure I was catching on, " You will have 4 different supervisors assigned to you and you will do as they say when you are with them. Do you understand?" I sat there wide-eyed and nodding. I had never expected this. This was way more than I could ever ask for.
I bowed my head, "I can not thank you enough, Your Majesty." there was a tired sigh in response and she called for the magi, Judar, whom was waiting outside the room the entire time.
"Judar, this girl will be living here in the palace from now on." She paused and Judar looked over at me, his red eyes blazing, obviously surprised. "She is not to be treated as royalty nor as a servant, she will be supervised at all times and she will have 4 different supervisors. I would like you to be one of them. You and 3 others will switch every day. She is to shadow you and the others and she must do as you say, otherwise she is free to do as she wishes as long as it is within reason. Is that understood?" Judar looked as if he was going to explode.
"Why the hell do I have to do it!? I have better things to do than babysit!" Judar glared blood-red daggers at the Empress, I guess he doesn't like being told what to do no matter who it is...
"Judar," she closed her eyes impatiently and massaged the bridge of her nose, "It is simply because I do not trust anyone else to do the job."
"Just who is she? Why does she get all this special treatment?" Judar snapped, his loud voice bounced around the room.
