Ayakou was born around the same time her half-brothers/sisters were. Meaning that Gyokuen was still married to the First Emperor. Long story short, there was an "incident" and Ayakou Ren was born. But considering she wasn't supposed to exist in the first place Gyokuen dumped her with a servant, keeping the whole thing a secret, who raised her the best she could until she was 17. While her half brothers and sisters were raised as princes and princesses, Ayakou learned to deal with the hard life in the slums.
