The next day, Gilbert headed to school with a plan. Forget about what had happened the past couple days, and move on. There was no point in dwelling on his self-discovery. He didn't want the awkwardness with Alfred to last any longer than it already had.
In order to ensure Alfred that he was sick yesterday and not just avoiding him, Gilbert made sure to stop by the boy's favorite coffee shop and grab him a bagel. When Gilbert arrived at school, he dropped his bag off in the locker room and headed towards their homeroom. As soon as he arrived, Alfred shot up from his seat and they did their secret handshake.
"What's up? Feeling better?" Alfred asked, eyeing Gilbert oddly.
"I'm fine. I stopped by Ricky's to get coffee and picked you up a bagel" Gilbert replied, holding the brown paper bag out in front of him for Alfred to take. Alfred grabbed it, opened it, and immediately shoved the bagel in his mouth.
"Thnks Gl!" Alfred replied, his voice muffled by the bagel. Gilbert laughed as a few sesame seeds escaped the American's mouth and landed on the floor in front of them. The teacher passed by with the attendance list and shot Alfred a death glare before pointing at the sesame seeds on the floor and scolding them for leaving a mess. Gilbert chuckled and picked up the seeds as Alfred continued stuffing his face.
"I have to get to class but I'll see you at practice" Gilbert said as he stood up from the ground. As he headed out the door, Alfred playfully slapped him on the butt.
"See ya" Alfred spoke, smiling as Gilbert stood frozen in front of him. Gilbert's face turned bright red before he continued to walk out of the room. Alfred always smacked his butt during football as a "congrats" or "good job" because its customary during sports matches, but he had never done it in the classroom. For some reason, as soon as it was in class Gilbert felt extremely uncomfortable. Or maybe he was just reading too far into it. They were best friends after all.

When it was finally time for practice Gilbert was excited to get back to playing. He had played horribly in the past practice, and he was ready to redeem himself. He was surprised the coach hadn't threatened to take his starting position away yet.
The practice started with a quick warm up and went into drills, where the offense practiced their positions for various plays and discussed the best way to go about beating the team they were playing for the home opener. After going over logistics, the coach announced they would be doing more conditioning, much to the chagrin of the players.
They starting off with monkey rolls, which were brutal for a group of kids who had already spent the first hour of practice on the 90 degree turf. By the end of the drill everyone was exhausted, so the coach announced that they were going to be doing something fun.
And by fun, he meant the absolute worst torture you could inflict among players who had already pushed themselves to the absolute limit. It was time for sprints.
The entire team groaned as the coach announced that the sprints would be relay sprints, and they would be split into two teams; shirts and skins. Since Alfred and Gilbert were captains, they would rock paper scissors over whose team got to take off their pads and shirts, and whose team would suffer with all their gear on. As the two captains approached the center of the circle, Alfred smirked.
"Your ass is grass and I'm gonna mow it" Alfred teased under his breath, only to be heard by Gilbert.
"Excuse me?" Gilbert replied, both amused and confused by what he meant.
"I-uh" Alfred stammered, suddenly embarrased, "You heard me!"
Gilbert laughed as Alfred's face flushed. He had tried to sound tough but miserably failed. As the team watched on, the two raised their hands and started their battle.
