They had been walking for what felt like literal hours. The sun had set, the darkness of the night settling over the forest in Hawkins. There was still no sign of anything that might lead them towards finding Will.
Eleven seemed confident, suddenly walking forward. They had been mostly following her lead, but she hadn't seemed super sure until this moment.
As the group entered the clearing, all they saw was the Byers' house, dark and empty.
"Here," Eleven stated like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
Everyone was confused, even Mabel. Will wasn't here. He went missing from this very place.
"Yeah, this is where Will lives," Mike spoke up. "Hiding," Eleven replied in almost a whisper.
Dipper rose an eyebrow. Was she being serious?
"This is where he lives, El," Mabel began to explain, "He went missing from here." "What are we doing here?" Lucas asked skeptically, dropping his bike to the ground with a loud boom. "She said he's hiding here," Dipper explained with the same level of skepticism. "Um... No!" Lucas sneered. "I swear, if we walked all the way out here for nothing-" Dustin began. "That's exactly what we did!" Lucas yelled, "I told you she didn't know what the hell she was talking about!" "Shut up, Lucas!" Mabel yelled out, uncharacteristically, "Just shut up!"
The boys went silent. They weren't used to Mabel being hostile. Mike was the first one to speak, using a calm, but authoritative voice.
"Why did you bring us here?"
Eleven began to stammer, trying to find the words. She didn't know how to explain to them what she knew. She couldn't even explain to Mabel about where Will truly was.
"This is a waste of time," Dipper chirped in, rolling his eyes, "We should be looking in the woods, not at Will's house." "You think we should go look in the woods?" Mabel asked sarcastically, "That's what we have been doing for hours!" "We need to call the cops," Lucas stated, "Like we should have done yesterday." "We are not calling the cops!" Mike stated, his eyes aflame. "Hey, guys?"
The gang turned towards Dustin.
On the road in front of the Byers' household, cop car after cop car went soaring past, full speed, then an ambulance. Mabel had a pit in her stomach. She had a feeling, a horrible feeling this was about Will.
"Will..." Dipper mumbled, his eyes locked on the red and blue lights.
The kids ran for their bikes, hoisting themselves on as quick as possible. The police cars lead them to the quarry. Mabel had fond memories of going boating in there, illegally of course, with her great uncles. Her Grunkle Stan always told stupid jokes about his ex wife.
That all changed when a body was hoisted from the quarry. Will. It was Will. It couldn't be, yet there it was, wearing the same vest he wore the night they'd last seen him.
Dipper's heart dropped. His best friend, his true love, his everything. Dead.
"It's not Will," Mike stated, not really truly believing it himself, "It can't be." "It's Will. It's really Will," Lucas replied, tears streaming down his face.
Mabel was so confused. Tears began to leak from her eyes. Will was alive, this wasn't possible, but yet something about seeing his body made her feel unsure about everything. She was unsure about even Eleven at this point.
"Mabel," Eleven reached her hand out to touch her friend, to let her know it was okay, but Dipper hit her hand away angrily. "Don't touch her! You're a liar!" Dipper yelled in the short haired girl's face.
He was devastated. Will, the boy who always knew how to make him smile, the boy who made him brave enough to be himself, was gone. He was dead, and that made a little piece of Dipper die.
Mike began to cry silently, but he held a sobbing Mabel close to his chest. The screaming of Dipper only seemed to make her cry harder.
"This whole fucking time, he's been dead, and you lead us on!" Dipper yelled at the confused and scared Eleven, tears streaming down his face. "Dipper, don't," Mabel stammered out through the sobs. "This is all your fault!" Dipper pushed Eleven down, making her fall to her knees. "Dipper! Stop!" Mabel pushed him back away from El, angry and upset. "You know what? I'm fucking out of here," Dipper stayed, grabbing his bike. "Dipper, cmon man," Lucas tried to stop him, but Dipper was already hopping on his bike, pedaling away.
As he rode home, all he could think about was the last thing he said to Will.
