she runs across the field barefoot without a care in the world, her hair flying behind her as her dupatta (scarf) falls on the ground and still, she runs, the excitement of the news feeding her as her pulse quickens and she has the feeling she's all too familiar with. Freedom.
She breathes as much of it as she can and now the pain of running is gone and all she can feel is the adrenaline running through her body and the air hitting her on her face.
she goes past the blue river and towards the apple trees lined neatly across the field which her father owns, in summer the leaves are a sight: bright green with the red of the apples and in the winter, they drift to the ground as silently and carelessly as an ash cloud, settling in to their eternal rest.
she stops to climb a tree and pick an apple of it and it is Wet and crisp as she bites into it, it breaks between her teeth with a soft crunch. The lingering sound drifts around her ears, filling her heart with pleasure. sweetness fills her mouth and for a moment, all falls still, as if a wave of content has drifted past and frozen the world. she keeps on chewing, biting until it's all gone. Then she climbs again to get another.
'you're quick on your feet and a fast climber puthar your my little son 'her Abu (dad) had once told her
'Abu I am your daughter why would I not be?' she had replied. And now she returned back to running she could barely contain the excitement as she burst through the blue gate of their house.
There's was the only house that looked decent, the rest of the village was very poor and could barely afford food. It is large and beautiful. The paintwork on the trim was brilliant white, flawless and the path wound to a blue gate. The windows weren't the large ones that are fashionable, but more the size used in old country cottages, The floors were and the furniture was very beautiful. The best thing was the soft rug on the floor, so clean it was hard to believe anyone had ever stepped foot on it.
"ANAYA come here right now. Your 17 you shouldn't be running around the village like that. IF I see you their tomorrow I'm going to grab you by your ear and drag you home"
Anaya's mum shouted fed up with Anaya's disobedience. Anaya came inside putting a frown across her face.
"NOW don't give me that attitude and go wash the dishes" Anaya's mum shouted from the kitchen.
Anaya thought of a time when she could be free of work and train freely in the Pakistani army. The thought made her smile but She knew that Mama would never let her join the army.
She went to go wash the dishes and just imagined her self-running around with a gun shooting the other countries enemies. She had a big passion for the Pakistani army it was all she wanted.
