sadie plumped herself outside the next day for lunch, in a group of daisies, twisting at them gently with her fingers as she sighed and her eyes dropped over the canvas that was the school.

she'd thought about taking up art classes, as it was something she'd always loved, but she didn't want people to tell her how she was supposed to do art.

a little voice whispered in her heart. go for it.

she didn't think it was talking about art.

she squeezed her eyes shut as she heard a voice behind her. "may i sit?"

"why are you talking to me? aren't you supposed to me eating with kenzie?" sadie turned around, facing a frowning caleb. "oh, sorry, let me correct myself." she trilled. "your girlfriend."

"sadie, please can i explain myself," caleb started, but sadie stood up, holding a finger to his lips, a frown on her face. "you don't need to explain anything. because we don't need to talk. i have places to be and you have girls to be with. have a good lunch." she slung her bag over her shoulder with a loud sigh and stormed off, and shuddered as she could feel caleb's eyes boring into her back as she walked away.

she didn't want things to be like this.

but she had to face facts, and the fact was, she was terrified to be around him. because she was afraid that the more she was around him, the more she would face facts, and the fact was...

she was in love with him, and no matter what she did, that wasn't gonna go away.

"hey, where'd you go yesterday?" iris chirped over the phone, and sadie adjusted it to her other hand, balancing it between her shoulder and her ear, tipping her head over to the side as she stroked her canvas with her paint, biting her lip as she squinted at it, adding flashes of color to her painting.

"i, uh... had a dentist appointment." sadie lied, standing up, and brushing flakes of paint out of her hair as she turned her canvas around, adjusting her phone again as she looked down at the painting.

"oh. okay. well, you're welcome to sit with us again tomorrow! we'll be expecting you."

"thanks, iris, but i dunno. i'm kinda a loner," sadie admitted, walking over to her desk and brushing her fingers over the picture frame consisting of a photo of her and millie, arms around each other, grinning.

sadie's lip quivered a little, missing millie, but she brushed it away as iris's hurt voice came through the phone again. "awe, sadie! c'mon! you're so fun! just consider it, okay?"

"i'll consider it," sadie promised, a smile finding its way to her lips as she said goodbye and hung up with iris.

"a loner, huh? it didn't seem like that when we were at that party. didn't you know everyone?"

a gasp escaped sadie's mouth as she flipped around, crashing against her desk in fright, fingers groping for the nearest thing to hit her intruder with.

caleb laughed, his eyes twinkling. "sorry, sades! just came to visit!"

"how the hell did you get in here?" sadie demanded, brushing herself off, and straightening her hair anyway, as there was paint all over her, there was not much she could do.

"so, you've started up painting." caleb commented, completely ignoring her question.

"maybe. yes." sadie sighed deeply, watching his eyes travel across her work, a smile finding its way to her lips as he brushed his fingers across her paintbrushes.

"it's pretty." he said, turning towards her. she immediately dropped her smile, crossing her arms in front of her chest.

"okay, caleb. i'm serious. what are you doing here?" she asked, her voice a little smaller this time.

"i want to know the truth." his voice was low, and hurt, a smile gone from his face as well. "why did you leave? and without saying goodbye? and leaving me, day after day, week after week, month after month, sadie!"

she felt a tear spiral down her cheek at his pained face. "sadie, i loved you. i.. i still love you."

her mouth opened a little to say something, but no words came out, her heart beating so fast she thought she might faint.

"sadie, i was so worried. and kenzie... i don't love her. my friend set me up with her, because of how depressed i was. and yes, she cheered me up. she does. but like i said, i don't love her, i love you, sadie. i love you. and there's nothing you could say to convince me that the way you're looking at me right now doesn't mean you love me too."

she crumpled, and then she was in her arms, her sobs echoing out across the bedroom as caleb held her tight, his hands pressing against her back, his breath warm on her neck, holding her, and comforting her.

he pulled back, his lips inching forward, and sadie so, so badly wanted to feel them on hers, but at the last second, she pulled back. "you have a girlfriend, caleb. and you really don't want to ruin that."

"yeah, a girlfriend that i don't love," caleb snorted, leaning in again.

"i think you should go," sadie mumbled, moving away from him.

"you... really want me to go?" caleb asked, hurt filling his voice.

"yeah... yes. i do." sadie's lip quivered, and caleb let out a short, shocked, laugh.

his smile disappeared as he saw sadie's face.

"yeah. well then. fine. i'm leaving. this isn't the end, sadie." he opened her bedroom window, and slipped outside into the night, and sadie was left to the sound of her own sobs as she realized what she'd just done.
