Chapter 1

I open the door to a coffee shop downtown, the bell jiggles, signaling a new customer entering, in this case, the customer is me. I place my wet yellow umbrella in the umbrella holder alongside with 5 other umbrellas. It’s pouring outside, nothing that big that will cause you to drench from your head to toe; it’s just a small drizzle. I look around the shop and found it to be empty; well of course, no one is crazy enough to spend their time in a coffee shop at this hour, especially when it’s pouring.

It’s late at night, almost midnight actually, but the busy street in New York has yet to empty. I could still see people, mostly guys, hailing a yellow cab or came out from the subway station. I’m pretty sure they are the people who have just came back from a club or parties, or maybe those are the people who snuck out from their families to go have fun in the middle of the night. Or maybe those people are just like me, a woman who just finish and came out from work –in other words, a workaholic.

You can’t blame me though, it’s hard not to drown yourself in work when you just want to get away from reality and you are one of the most famous people in the state and country. No, I am most definitely not singer, heck I couldn’t even sing to save my life. I’m not an actress either; I am someone I consider more important than actors or singers. I help people with their big special day. The only day where two couples are swore and tied down by their vows. The day where you witness two couples exchange vows and made a life time promises. You should’ve guessed what I am by now; I am the most well-known wedding planner in the country.

Before I knew it, I found myself sitting in the same booth I’ve always sit at whenever I came here to this shop. Sometimes the shop is packed especially when there’s jazz night or a local band is playing. I heard the jazz and the band are good, but I never know; I always avoided mass crowd as best as I can.

“Welcome Ms. Boulanger, what can I get for you?” the bubbly waitress asked with a high pitch and cheery tone that sounded too faked. Of course it’s fake, who would want to serve a customer at this hour. But of course, they can’t make complains, I know their manager too well that in one call, they could be fired.

I smiled politely at her, “A cheesecake and a cup of hot chocolate would suffice.”

She nodded and turns around, leaving me alone with my thoughts and silence. But it was all soon broken by the sound of my phone ringing. I look at the caller ID and smiled before sliding the button and answered.

            “Hello?” I asked smiling widely.

“Victoria can’t believe you’re still up. I need your help.” The caller said.

            “What is it, Lucas?”

“My sister’s wedding is in two months yet she can’t seem to pull herself together. Her fiancée and she need help. Can you help them out?” I stayed silent. Lucas has been my best friend since we were in high school. Back in England, I wasn’t originally from London, I stayed with my grandmother in Manchester as both my parents are too busy to look after me and my brother. But when she passed away, leaving me and my brother alone, my parents have no choice but to took us back to London with them. But they were rarely home, my brother and I were brought up by our maids and bodyguards. Needless to say, I was a loner and when Lucas first talked me, I imagine him as a total jerk and jackass. I mean those are what most popular high school boys are; but he proved me wrong. He introduced me to his friends and ever since then we were inseparable.

“Does that mean I would have to stay in London for two months?” I finally asked

“Yes, I know you don’t have a great history here with your parents and him. But please?” I could hear the desperation clear in his voice, I could never say no to the person who has helped me with so much. So I just give in and promised him I would be in London as soon as I can and after a few thank yous, I ended the phone call.

Before I moved to New York, my life was a disaster. My parents are devils who keep pressuring me into business because apparently they want me to take over their stupid hotel and resorts business, and I quote, “this is our family business and you, Victoria will take over this business after graduating high school and work together with your brother; it has been destined.” And that was the final straw. I told my parents I didn’t want to take over a business at such a young age and should just let my brother handled them. But they wouldn’t listen.

So being a coward I am, I ran away. The day after my graduation, with a small blue suitcase, a phone and a small amount of cash in my wallet, I went to Lucas for help. I’ve heard that he was going to New York for college and that is probably my only way to get away from the stupid and idiotic business. He hesitated at first, but eventually let me to come with him. When we landed in New York, I emailed my brother, hoping he would understand and not to tell my parents about my whereabouts. And my brother too, had been nothing but helpful to me. As soon as he found out the reason why I ran away and that I’m in good hand, he sends me money every month, enough for college and to rent an apartment.

But that was a long time ago, I’ve been through more after that, but needless to say, without those experience, I wouldn’t be here today, sitting in a coffee shop, enjoying my freedom and is one of the well known woman in the country.

AN. Chapter 2 and 3 will be posted together as soon as I can.
