It's been six hours now, that Natasha and I have been roaming the biggest mall of New York, Macy's. The energy and enthusiasm of the first shops has worn off. As long as we have been traipsing around the mall, we still haven't found a dress. We have, though, found shoes and jewelry, but what's the point, when we've got no dress ? I spot yet another dress shop, and we head towards it.
"Tell me again why I can't just wear a pair of jeans and a nice shirt ?", she complains.
"Because my brother is marrying Coco Delude, a well-known actress. There will be lots of celebrities, as well as journalists. Those guys don't wear jeans unless it's from Jean-Paul Gaultier."
"Ugh."
"I know. But look, there's a good shop, I'm sure we'll find something there."
"A good shop ? And how is monsieur supposed to know that ?"
"Natasha ! I'm trying to be optimistic, here !"
"Right. Sorry."
We enter the shop. It's big and spacious. The pieces of clothing hanging from the walls offer a good idea of the kind of dresses they sell. As In, the expensive kind. But I'm too exhausted to care about the price. A young shop assistant greets us.
"Hello, she says. What are you looking for ?"
"I'm looking for a dress. For a wedding, answers Natasha."
"Well, we have the perfect one for you, miss ! Follow me."
She makes me sit on one of the many chairs in front of the changing cabins, and my little finger is telling me these are the chairs many boyfriends and husbands have to sit in when their girls drag them along while shopping. But whatever, I'm too tired to think about it.
The assistant ushers Natasha in a free room with a yellow silk dress hanging on her arm. Already the color suits Natasha's skin perfectly and I'm starting to think this is finally the dress we have been searching for.
I don't have to wait long before she's ready.
As she steps out of behind the curtains, the world slows down. The dress is magnificent. I gape at her for a very long time, but I can't help it. She's beautiful. The structure of the dress makes her soft curves, her long legs and neck stand out and the color adds warmth to her eyes and draws attention on the golden glow of her skin. I fear the bride will look ugly and poor next to her...
As I come back to my senses, I realize a few other men are looking at her. Jealousy takes over and I quickly tell the shop assistant :
"We'll take it."
Natasha smiles, relieved. She clearly didn't notice the stares nor the attention she just had. She's just happy we finally found a dress.
When she's back to her normal clothes, I practically pull her out of the mall, away from the looks of envy and desire of the other men. She's in a good mood now, telling me science facts. But I don't listen. I didn't like the jealousy I felt a couple of minutes ago. I promised myself to never envy other men or become dependent of another woman again. After what Lina did to me...
How could I ever love again ?
My mind wanders to her. That girl was my sun and my storm, she was my life and my death. And she loved me too. So why did she cheat on me ? And with my own brother ? How pathetic is that?
I force myself to think about something else. I look around me. We are walking in a crowded street, the sun heating my face. I relax again. I should forgive Lina. Or maybe not.
"Daniel ?"
Surprised, I turn my head back at Natasha.
"Yes ?"
"Um... Do you know her ?"
"Who ?'
I look in the direction she's pointing at. And there, standing in front of me, is the blonde beauty who broke my heart. My Nemesis.
