Prologue
Aella's POV
I walk up the dirt road with my best friend Morana, wishing once again that we could have an adventure. The both of us have grown extremely bored with everyday life, but we can't really do anything about it. I look at Morana and see her blonde hair is now past her shoulders, and her eye's -one blue, one green- are full of boredom. My own hair is a white-blonde and was cut in a pixie-cut last week, and my eyes are blue. Our school holidays started yesterday, and since both my parents are working, I got to go to Morana's. We're both 15, and in year 10 at school, but our parents like to think we're still young and need to be looked after.
10 minutes ago we both got bored so decided to take a walk around Daveyston, a small town in the Barossa, in Australia, where we happen to live. A small pine forest hides many of the houses from the freeway, and behind it is the bush. Morana and I decided to explore a mysterious dirt road that we haven't been down before. We've been walking down this road for 5 minutes now.
"Where do you think it leads Aella?" Morana asks me looking at a small unused pathway that leads into the bush.
"I don't know, maybe the secret lair of a witch!" I say my imagination getting the better of me.
"Shall we?" she asks me her eyes full of curiosity, as mine probably are too. I look back at the small town in the distance, and then face the path again.
"We shall!" I say grabbing her arm and running down the path. As we walk further down the path the trees get closer together, and the branches created an archway overhead, blocking out most of the sunlight. Soon the branches are so low they would hit the head of an average person. Luckily both Morana and I are short, I'm 5.3 feet and Morana is 5.2 feet, so our heads barely skim the lowest of branches. We keep walking and after what felt like a few minutes I check my watch.
"It's been 20 minutes!" I cry to Morana, she looks back at me from a few meters ahead.
"Really?" she asks confused "It feels like it's been a few minutes,"
I nod at her bemused, then look around us, and see something I did not expect. A clearing, with a small stream running through the far edge, it looked about 10 meters wide and 20 meters in length.
"Morana, look," I tell her standing in front of the arched tree entrance. She turns around and walks back to where I'm standing, and she gasps.
"Wow, Aella, it's so pretty," she says following me into the clearing. We look around for a bit and sit down on a large rock that sits near the middle. We stare at the clearing in silence for a few more minutes, and then stare at each other, a smile creeping on both of our faces.
"This is our place now!" Morana tells me, I nod my head vigorously the smile never leaving my face.
"Let's come back here, it can be like our sanctuary," I say looking around again "Our secret hideout!"
I look at Morana and we smile at each other, our previous boredom forgotten. We sit here for another few minutes and head back out through the archway. I pick up two sticks and push them both in the ground, either side of the entrance. We then head back home our adventure for the day, done.
